It's pretty disturbing news indeed, although not shocking I suppose. Given the amount of rice and rice cakes I (we) all eat, I'm not sure what to do either.
I've been trying to reduce grains overall to a few times a week and stick more with potatoes as my starch, but I'm sure there is something wrong with those too that has yet to be diclosed.
I can't wait for the day I can tolerate more starchy tubers/veggies like squashes, carrots and sweet potatoes so I can avoid some of these grain issues altogether and get starch from more nutrient dense and colorful foods!
arsenic
In my public health program, they taught us that there is arsenic in all American grown rice. This is because of old pesticide formulas. Even though arsenic is no longer used in American pesticides, its still in the ground, and the chemical structure of it is easily absorbed into the part of rice which helps the plant stand up. Furthermore, most foreign pestisides still contain arsenic--argentina, china etc. This was the source of the apple juice arsenic scandal--because much of the apple juice consumed here comes from concentrate produced in these countries. Also, there was something incorrect in the article. Organic arsenic is WAY different from inorganic arsenic, and much safer to consume.

Here is a nice article that may help quell some worries. I will try to stick to organic rice whenever I can.
