Hey everyone!
Newbie here. I just read about 80% of all the forum posts, LOL, wild sunday. Anyway, I love this website and believe Matia really knows what she is doing. I cannot wait for my appointment.
Anyway, I have read SO many articles/studies about IC over the last few months. One trend that I cannot get out of my mind is the fact IC affects mostly caucasians (most studies state 90% of IC sufferers are white), and mostly women. Now, I am half hispanic/half white and grew up in a city that was a melting pot of races. I have realized (and this is just a generalization not a fact, please don't be offended) that white women lean more towards high carb/low meat diets. I noticed hispanics and blacks tend to eat a lot of meat. I also ran across this article http://www.biblelife.org/bowel.htm which talks about how vegan diets are ruining people's guts. After reading this and Matia's take on vegan diets, I wonder if there is a connection? I grew up eating meat, but pretty much stopped once I moved out on my own ten years ago. I thought I was doing something good, but I am thinking it was the start of my problems. I also use to run long distances, which according to the article is another way to mess up the gut. Again, thinking I was doing good when I wasn't. Hmmm, was anyone else a vegetarian/low meat eater when they got IC???
Hi MelBell, Welcome! You
Hi MelBell, Welcome! You bring up a very interesting point. I am a white woman and have always been a meat eater, but when I got IC in college I was not eating much meat and the meat I ate was certainly low quality... so I am not even sure my body would have recognized chicken nuggets as a food. ..lol. I certainly crave meat now and specifically feel much better when eating red meat.
Great research!

I was a bad vegetarian(pizza
I was a bad vegetarian(pizza and pasta not pumpkin seeds, lentils, etc) for 2 years while I was on the pill followed by fertility drugs. I started eating meat while pregnant with my first son 9 yrs ago and then eventually went into a more traditional foods diet/low carb. (Nourishing Traditions)I believe the vegetarianism caused imbalances that were exacerbated by the Pill etc. or vice versa The pill depletes you of B12 and zinc and those are 2 of the nutriets that are hard to get while not eating meat. My sister became a vegan last year and it drives me crazy. She is actually thinking of opening a Vegan store! I have to take deep breaths and bite my tongue. Ugh.
You are definitely on to something!!
Real Food is a great easy to read book that I recommend.
I've always been a meat
I've always been a meat eater, I even did the Atkins diet for a few years. I did eat a lot of carbs before too. I am not sure what I did to get myself so out of balance but I do feel better eating meat everyday.
poor diet
yes I was sort of vegetarian almost 6 years before IC...
I agree
MelBell, I agree and actually have thought the same thing. I am white, and my Mom did not make meat growing up. I hardly touched it, we ate a lot of baked stuff so high carbs. I also went vegatarian for 2 years in high school.
I also thought that it was healthy not to eat meat, but now my body needs it. Especially on Dr. B's protocol. I think all the probiotics make me digest my food really fast and if I don't eat meat (red meat) everyday then my body hurts and feels weak.
Luckily for my Husband is Mexican, and we get to enjoy a lot of carne asada, and costillitas. So I love eating my red meat, and I know its doing good for my body.
I've noticed if I don't eat
I've noticed if I don't eat red meat for at least 1 meal- I am starving. If I eat a full meal with chicken- it is like I ate nothing a half andf hour later.
