Death by Itch

So Dr. B once told me that hot yoga wasn't the best exercice for those with IC as it encourages detoxifying too quickly because of the profuse sweating. I did continue with it however as I've been doing it for years and always felt better afterwards.  BIG MISTAKE.  I went to a particularly challenging class this past weekend, my first in over a month.  Later that afternoon I noticed what looked like a heat rash all over my body.  The worst however was the EXTREME ITCHING.  It's worse than anything I've ever felt. I actually have broken blood vessels all over my body from scratching!  I've contacted her and she says the detox reaction and rash should go away in the next few days.  It's bizarre, the rash disappears during the day and then comes back in the evening with a VENGEANCE.  *Sigh* well at least people at work don't need to know that at home I look like a leper...

Has this happened to anybody else???  I guess I'm off hot yoga from here on out!!

Wow, that is horrible! Hope you feel better soon.

I have not done hot yoga. But I have done a hard cardio class before, and the next day I am exhausted. I feel the die off increases. So if I feel bad that week I just don't workout at all.

Right now I just think it's kind of funny, but it's not evening yet when this darn thing seems to return... I agree that I often feel really exhausted, in a bad way, when I work out too hard.  I guess we just really have to listen to our bodies and take it easy on ourselves.
I'm upset about the hot yoga because it's an activity I love and it's bonding time with my sister. Sometimes I just want to scream "How much more about me do I need to change to deal with this horrible condition??" My diet, my mindset, my views on health, my activities...  Where does it end? My husband and I were just saying yesterday how much IC has changed our lives. I know that in the long run I'll feel these changes are for the better. It just doesn't feel that way right now.

Hi Lauren,

I have had EXACTLY the same thing happen to me- this was long before I found Matia, though.  I went to a hot yoga class and then broke out in a terrible red itchy rash that lasted several days.  It was awful!  I think I put neem oil on it- don't know if that's allowed or even if it really helped but I felt like I had to do something! I had scabs from the scratching that lasted quite a long time.

I miss hot (and regular vigorous) yoga, but do find that my bladder is better without it.  I hope this passes for you soon!  I'm sure it will but what a nuisance!

Hi Claire,
I'm sorry you experienced this too, but I'm glad to know it went away with no lingering effects.  Mine lasted two days and seems to have fully disappeared.  In case it happens again Dr. Brizman recommended a mixture of jojoba and goldenseal oils applied topically. Now I just have to wait for all my scratch marks to go away :)
I realize that these sorts of detox crises are bad, but does anyone know exactly WHY? I understand that the toxins are trying to get out faster than our bodies can handle, but isn't it still better to have the toxins out rather than in?Lauren

I've had to stop all my exercise besides walking and I am a serious dancer/yoga/exerciser. That is really really tough for me. I asked Dr Babout the sdetox thing that you were talking about. When you are a healthy person, cleansing this way is good -when you have IC- it kind of sisperses the toxins etc throughout the body and I guess kind of overwhelms the systm. The goal is to detox in a calm and measured way as much as possible. Believeme- ifelt like- "well if it is lymph getting stuck in my neck when I dance- shouldn't I just push it even more?" I have a lot of disicpline as far as diet and exercise so it has been a tough lesson for me to actually do LESS. Hope that makes some sense I am trying to type fast. Ps- I would NEVER try hot yoga myself right now.

Hi Lauren: I don't have a lot of die off symptoms so I may be a bad example but regular yoga is great for me. My bladder pain goes away  during class and the relief lasts for several hours. I find anything vigorous gets rid of my pain but obviously, others are having a different experience . I hope that you are feeling better now. love, Bonnie

Hi Bonnie,I'm fully recoverd, thanks. I actually had a question about yoga. Do you know if certain types are better than others to practice with IC? I've signed up to take a Kundalini yoga course which I've never done before. I'm just a little concerned because when reading the class description the brochure explained that this type of yoga moves energy from th base of the spine to the head. I know that Dr. Brizman discourages energy work for us during treatment. Do you know if only certain types of yoga are approved by Dr. Brizman (ie. hatha or vinyasa)? Or is she okay with all types of yoga so long as they're not in a hot room or too vigorous?
I'm glad your yoga is helping you! Hopefully its helps me as well.Lauren

Hey everyone,
So I spoke to Dr. B. last night and the only types of yoga she takes issue with are any sort of hot yoga or kundalini (which, as I mentioned, involves energy flow).  I've withdrawn from that class and am taking a vinyasa class instead.
