Hi Guys,
Ugh so after months of being almost symptom free and doing so well I'm suddenly having a flare again and feeling a bit disheartened by it all. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this?
Admittedly I got a bit over confident last few weeks and started sneaking in bread here and there and if I was eating out I'd let a slightly sweet sauce on an Asian dish or something along those lines slip through the cracks (I'm supposed to be on list 3). None of it seemed to affect me directly after but now I'm thinking that yeast and sugar may be catching up with me and causing the flare again and I'm super angry at myself for cheating on the diet now.
I really thought I would be able to start introducing these foods again slowly as I was feeling better but I guess not... now it has me worried I'll just never be able to eat these things again.... or alternatively not sure if it's something else causing the flare??
Just wondering if anyone further down the line got caught in a flare after being almost symptom free and whether it passed quickly for you? Or what you did to make it pass?

Sure this must be scary! But keep this in mind- you have had MONTHS of doing well? You'll be back there soon. It isn't about me for sure but to put in in perspective- I have had only DAYS of doing well in 20 months of treatment. No cheating for now and you'll be back!

So sorry! I know that this happens. Check with Dr. B about the yeasted bread and/or sauces, as that sounds like a likely culprit. One patient further in treatment likened adding foods too soon to walking on a broken leg that is almost done healing. You want to wait until you know the bone is strong before introducing new foods. Having said that, maybe Dr. B will surprise you and say that you are in fact ready very soon for yeasted breads, but maybe need to avoid sweetened restaurants sauces for a while. Just proceed with caution under her guidance and you will be back on track soon!!

I like the illustration about walking on a leg that was broken and almost healed. I'll keep that in mind when tempted! Also, i might consider not eating out anymore, as i had some red cabbage in a restaurant, but it did taste sweet, so then wondered if it contained sugar. I still ate it, harder to resist when it is on your plate. And yesterday i had pork, with bbq sauce on it, probably contains sugar too.
Maybe easier to stick to my own, home cooked food for now! Thanks for the idea!

Agree! Also, Dr. B took Pork off the lists a while back. Maybe it is list 5? May contain parasites or other scary things and Dr. B noticed patients not doing very well on it. No pork. :) Miss my bacon :)
One delicious option is to ask your butcher to grind up grass-fed (or other) BEEF short ribs. My butcher makes a salt and pepper beef short rib BURGER. YUM!! Lots of fat, but a really nice treat and would make a nice sausage substitute.

I'm so sorry that happened to you. The exact same thing happened to me last month. I'd been totally pain-free for over six months and then WHAM, all my symptoms suddenly returned with a vengeance.
I freaked out for about a week, until my next Dr. B appointment. Dr. Brizman thought that it was an acute flare caused by having unprotected sex with my husband. So, now he's on probiotics too and we're taking some time off until trying again without a condom. The good news is that Dr. Brizman changed up my protocol and now the pain in totally gone!
What I'd recommend to you is keep really good records of everything you did and ate leading up to your flare. That'll help Dr. B get to the root of what's going on. That having been said, sometimes there's no smoking gun when you suddenly flare. I had a really good e-mail chat with Nadia, a former patient of Dr. B, that has gone on to fully heal. She told me about how after 7 months pain-free she suddenly had pain for a couple months. She believes it was her body going into a deeper level of healing. In any case, it passed, and she's now doing great.
Try to take care of yourself right now, and don't freak out as the stress will make everything worse (I know, easier said than done). Take it one day at a time, have faith in Dr. B and the healing process, especially in this difficult time.

I wanted to add that my sister is a chef at a renowned West-coast restaurant. You would be amazed at how often chefs add sugar and salt to things.

Mimi- I really like that analogy of the broken leg. I'll keep that in mind next time I think of cheating.
Willow - I'm glad to hear you're feeling better after your flare. Sounds like a lot of people get some good time off and then get a sudden flare again. So at least it's comforting to know I'm not a freak case.
Out of interest Willow, what did Dr B to to change up your protocol that worked for you?
I'm waiting to get in for another appointment but in the meantime she's just told me to go back to list 1-2 on the diet until the flare passes.
I'm feeling a touch better today but still symptomatic. It's the frequency that drives me nuts... having to find a bathroom every couple of hours. I know it will pass again though.
