Eating Sugar ACCIDENTALLY

Hi all.  So the ENTIRE time I've been in treatment (19 months-ish), I haven't consumed any sugary anything.  I've always been pretty faithful to the diet.  Last night, I was out to dinner with friends and my friend ordered a side of these fried veggie things.  They were mainly zucchini and sweet potato and safe for me.  Long story short, they messed up her special order and forgot to bring it out... So to make it up to her, they brought her a larger portion of the order.  It was a lot of food, so she offered to share with the table.  I took part and bit into the first "veggie."  NOT a veggie!!  It was a fried Oreo!  (I guess it was the restaurant's attempt at saying "sorry for messing up your order.. here are some Oreos mixed in with your veggies!")  I held it in my mouth for a minute, not knowing quite what to do.  I ended up spitting it into my napkin, but there were still pieces stuck in my teeth, which I know I consumed.  I'm having increased pain today, and just wondering if anyone has ever consumed sugar accidentally?? (or even on purpose? and had a bad reaction?) How long did it typically take to "recover" from that?  I'm trying to figure it out because I also increased my Bifido dose to 1 1/2 caps on Friday, so I'm just trying to figure out if the pain is from the Oreo or the slight increase in Bifido.  I've been doing well on Bifido, so I'm thinking it's the Oreo, but just wanted to see if anyone else ever had a sugar incident they might be willing to share with me?  Thanks!!  PS- The Oreo tasted so nasty. It is incredible how much our taste buds change during this process!

Oh man, that is no good! I can't say I have had any sugar, but when I try to add anything in with fructose I have definite increased pain. So, I guess it is totally plausible to have increased pain, but doesn't sound like you ingested very much, so if the pain doesn't subside in the next day probably from the bifido and not the sugar. Also, just a thought, but maybe just the anxiety of the situation could be increasing your pain. Hope the pain subsides soon! Hang in their Tinkerbell!

When I saw this, I was like mmmm, I wonder how the oreo tasted.  LOL, my fav from back in the day.  Did it taste chemically?

I haven't been sugared, but I have been soyed/vinegared/inhaled a bunch of stuff accidentally in chem lab.  It just made me have a normal flare--like when I try to eat almonds, but worse.  I know people who cheat with sugar and say it made them feel better.
I would email Dr. B!

Today I took a tiny (I mean TINY) bite of a homeade oatmeal cookie.  They didnt look done so I did.  Usually if I flare, its the next day.  My stupid move.  Will see what tomorrow brings. Aside from that, Im still on list 3 and sparingly eat green apple and mango.  I mean like once or twice a month.... in small qtys. Hope this passes soon for you.

I agre with what cprince said  - anxiety is the worst trigger for bladder pain (at least for me!) and is probably much worse than a few crumbs of sugar you swallowed. Try to relax :)

Agreed!
I have certainly vinegared/extra virgin olive oiled , etc. myself while out to eat before for sure and it is a scary feeling...I usually just get down on myself for accidentally doing so, but we're doing the best we can, we can't be perfect all the time! ....it will pass and  you will get through it for sure...

Thank you, friends!  You're right... I think stress  and anxiety also has a lot to do with it.  I'll be moving across the country in the next couple of weeks, so my life is kind of upside down right now as it is... Since the Oreo incident, I'm feeling pretty much "normal" again this morning.  Yesterday was rough though!  This coming month is probably one of the most stressful months I will have during treatment, so this Oreo thing just really threw me for a loop.  It looks like the Bifido is doing fine as of right now though. Thank goodness!

Researchnerd, I guess checmically is a good way to describe it.  It was overly sweet, but not in a yummy dessert kind of way.  More like in a mouth tingly, gaggy way.  Like sickeningly sweet poisonous plastic.  Just really gross.  Oreos used to be my fav, too!!  But now they're gross.  I'd much rather have a sweet potato!  (Never thought I'd ever say that...)

I know.  Its weird how that happens!  I looked at the ingredients of the oreos the other day, and they are foul!

Hi Tink! I wanted to say I don't think that little bit of cookie would be a problem. I've had small amounts of suger here and there and in the beginning they may have caused me some bladder distress but lately it doesn't bother me. I was on vacation two weeks ago and I was feeling fine so while at the buffett I had a very small piece of cheese cake. I would love to say that is was nasty and too sweet but it honestly was good..... until a few hrs later when I tried to go to sleep. I was soooo stomach sick with cramps and acid reflux, I wanted to die. I laid in bed until about 2am suffering until I finally passed out. My bladder was fine tough! I told Matia about it last week and I said maybe it's a good thing that my body can no longer tolerate suger so maybe I won't eat it again!

I once cut up a veggie for a lunch salad on an workplace kitchen cutting board that had sweet and low spilled on it from my co workers sloppy coffee breaks. I was so pissed off. I did flare from it but it was such an isolated event it did not matter. It was a only a few bites and it did not do any lasting damage other than make me flare that day. If it happens - then don't worry about it. IT is what you do on a consistent level that makes the difference here with IC treatment.  It was very early in tx and I had lots of crap coming out of me so it was kinda hard to say cause I was flaring all the time anyway. I would not recommend cheating AT ALL. There are patients that would cheat where they would just "taste" and then spit out the food and they all seemed to never get well to me. I think the minute it gets in your system then its there.you digetive tract is in your mouth too.

Honeybee, thanks for mentioning the "tasting" and spitting thing. That certainly is tempting and I think you are right it is not good!
