How many patients developed IC after taking Birth Control?

Hi ladies,

I'm just curious as IC came a knocking after I was on BC for 4 years.  What took it past the point of no return was that I took cipro to get rid of presumably a UTI (this made it 100 times worse!),  I know everyone is different but I'm wondering if alot of her patients develop IC due to long term use of IC?

I started BC after heavy bleeding post baby, about 4 months after our son was born.  My Dr placed me on it to stop heaving bleeding (meaning, passing blood clots).  Now, I'm thinking that was just post birth heaving menstruation?  Before I was pregnant with out son, I had a miscarriage a few months prior which I needed to have a D&C.  I'm also thinking that, coupled with pregnancy, hormonal changes, and then a c-section after 28 hour labor all aggravated in me getting IC?  I'm just wondering out loud how on earth I could have gotten this!  Im close to 2 years into treatment and yes I am better but still have a LONG way to go...

i dont think there are any exact reason...just a perfect storm of things on a weakened body. I developed  IC after my 3rd baby. I was put on antibiotics in my 8th month because of a UTI (MY First Ever) i had 2 more infections with continued antibiotics. After my delivery I was given IVIG infusions (I have MS) I was given IV steriods bc they thought this was MS related, high doses of ibruprofen, BC for 4 months( this was the first time ever on BC) Then when my daughter was 8 months old, I woke up with horrendous pelvic pain & it has never gone away.
I look back and go over everything these stupid doctors gave me & think how could this NOT have happened. I was weak from a delivery & all preceding problems. I have always used alternative medicine for most things but I was scared & thought something was fatally wrong with me & I trusted doctors too much! I think all of these factors contributed to this happening to me. It does me know good to ponder what I should have done...I just have to move forward & bodly fight through to heal.

Dr B said that my IC is most likely caused by my useof birth contorl pills ( was on them on and off from 19-30 yrs of age) and my heavy reliance on ibuprofen/ paracetamol. there is so much in my history that i was sure would have more impact on my health but apparently those two seemingly 'safe' things were the preceeding factors. Needless to say i am off birth control and dont touch anything in a pill unless it is prescribed by Dr B.

Thank you everyone who has candidly shared their background.  This is all really interesting to read about everyone's journey to where we are.  I have been thinking alot about this the past 2 years, trying to get an understanding as to where I went wrong.  I want to tell othe women the horrible side effects of taking BC and how it changes your life but I know that they would think I'm crazy.
Aside from IC, I have migraines, extremely cold body (cold feet down to the bone freezing cold), depression, fungus on right toe, anxiety, sleep issues, Lichen Simplex which started as psioriassis (this is my biggest challenge for the past year), had IBS, issues with stress which then trigger IBS,, diarrhea, I have had constipation (which now hardly ever happens).  My relationship with my mother has always been distant, she has the same bladder issues, stresses over everything, major anexiety.   I feel like my health issues are a spitting image to hers BUT I have urged her to go seek treatment by Dr B. she wont.  She has major stomach issues and has asked me what I do, but she wont change her diet and believes that her Dr's will help her.  I am so grateful that I havent really been on alot of drugs, I had no idea how terrible prescription meds could harm your body until I started reading others journeys.

I also am OCD, extremely major control issues but I finally have found a therapist to deal with alot of perfectionism, Type A personality issues to name a few.  I'm an introvert to top it off so I'm having a hard time over analyzing and thinking about this over and over.  My therapist has started to help me through issues the past 6 weeks, it has been so helpful and I'm finally dealing with long term deep depression and pray I can get past this.  At 41, I'm finally taking care of myself.

hi fellow healers,
.....my story getting ic ...as me and doctor B analyzed , my gut was never good since childhood, .....started getting burps, indigestion, allergies, and lot of allergies to any kind of strong smell , running nose all the time ,lot of anxiety and then depression.....and now 6 months back i started feeling burning after urination..went to see doctor all the tests came negative and still he gave me cipro and the burning didnt go ,then another doctor said u might have chronic prostatities(bactarial infection in prostate) and gave me again cipro .....and even i without knowing the side effects took them for almost 5months and during 6th month got an apointment with a urologist and he did cystoscopy and found i have ic and the doctor said ur prostate is fine.....how stupid i was.....after meeting Dr.B I found that the burning in the urination was due to my immunity getting low....and now i m in disaster.....BUT NOW I SEE A RAY OF RISING SUN

Tommygurl there are some similarities in our background to getting ic: I was on birth control, came off after about 8 years, there were signs of imbalance then, so took cipro, few weeks later miscarriage, 10 days later laparoscopy and few days after that ic!! I think when cipro is involved: the body is already imbalanced, then cipro destroys any of the good bacteria that was still there, and in my case, my weakened body couldn't cope with trauma of the laparoscopy. Looking back I can see far too much happened to my body, while not looking after it. Even though, I never smoked/ drank much alcohol, but now I know so much more is required to keep a body healthy:-)

I also developed IC after coming off the pill - I'd been on it for about 2.5 years. Within a month after coming off the pill I got my first (real) bladder infection. It was treated with antibiotics and it went away. A few weeks later my symptoms came back, however this time the culture was negative. The feeling passed but it would come up every now and then and I'd usually just take antibiotics because I was scared. I also developed horrible pelvic pain around this time that doctors couldn't figure out. I was afraid something was very wrong and that I was infertile because of the pain. I got pregnant easily, but had two early miscarriages. After that I had a laparascopy because the doctor thought I might have endometriosis, but it was clear. I was terrified I had a pelvic infection and went on 2 rounds of multiple, very harsh antibiotics that did nothing for my pain. I wish I could go back and change that. My pelvic pain eventually subsided after a year but the bladder continued to get worse and I want to cringe when I think of how many antibiotics I took every time I feared it was a bladder infection. I also have so much anger towards many of the doctors I saw who brushed me off as a hyponchoriac and paranoid. But I guess all we can do is be glad we found a more holistic approach and move forward with healing!

IN my early 20's, I was on the pill and would get "bladder infections" all the time. I took a round of antibiotics every time and then for a while was taking a prophylactic course every time I had sex!!!! I now think this was ic with a few real infectins thrown in. I am amazed that my body was able to balance itself  enough that the symptoms stopped once I was off the pill, It tool my 3rd pregnancy and an elimination diet ( I was advsed by a Dr to do to supposedly to help my breastfeeding baby) Coconut oil (being told I had a yeast problem which actually is not my big issue) was my big trigger!

it used is hard for me not to be angry at the drs who have contributed to our illness but truly, we can only move forward! I just worry about so many other young women. My babysitter just got on the Pill for issues with her period and I just cringe.

Mine was definitely not brought on by use of BC, only being on it for 9 months in attempt to regulate my cycle to help me conceive, obviously that was a stupid decision and did not work. While on BC my migraines got worse and more frequent along with continuation of constant yeast infections and was on constant antifungal treatments. I couldn't take it any longer so stopped on my own, but once I stopped everything started coming to a head: off the charts anxiety, R side feeling heavy, numb and tingling, brain fog, extreme fatigue, frequency and urgency got worse and yeast infections continued, horrific cramps returned and cycle returned to my normal infrequent visit. Which, I welcomed so I didn't have to endure the pain. I rarely took any OTC meds other then Advil or Aleve for cramps.
My history: I had been on multiple antibiotics as a child for WBC in urine, but no real UTI confirmed, and ear infections. startd getting GERD and stomach/gut issues in 4th grade and started to cut foods on my own. In teens more antibiotics for acne and sinus infections, steroid inhalers for asthma. In late teens a d early 20's IBS started to really come to a head after moving to college afraid of public restrooms, stress of school, being away from home, loss of my dad to cancer, then ovarian cysts started to rupture and diagnosed with PCOS, steroid injection in L hip to continue to compete at college level track, and later L knee scope for torn maniscus and chondromalacia, and steroid iontophoresis treatments for L TMJ (caused by old horse riding accident in early teens), drank moderate amount 1-2x/week. In mid 20's in grad school bladder really started to act up and burning urethra, IBS worse, chronic headaches/migraines, chronic yeast infections, constant indigestion/GERD, anxiety, extreme  fatigue, chronic athlete foot on R foot only. Poor diet and stress through undergrad and grad school did not help matters either, hardly ate meat, typical college budget ramin noodles, cereal, granola bars, chips and salsa, and salad. Yikes! Can't change the past, and so glad I have the knowledge to help regain my health that I don't think I ever really had. I have a long way to go, I can't deny that, but making slow progress.
