Die off?

Hi lovely souls!

Another question, sorry! I'm just wondering if it is possible to have die off with just the diet and probiotics alone? I have been following the diet for around 6 weeks and have also been taking probiotics (I have been taking these probiotics for around a year, shortly after getting IC, on the recommendation of a naturopath). These probiotics are a very high dose, with many strains of good bacteria. I have heard that Dr. B only recommends a specific strain and at a low dose at the beginning, however I am waiting for my Natren probiotics to arrive. I am not actually in treatment yet as I am awaiting my first appointment with Boaz so I am not on any herbs yet. However, the past few days, while my bladder has actually been feeling pretty good (Pretty much no pressure which is heavenly as pressure is normally a CONSTANT symptom for me), the rest of my body is struggling! Sooo tired, headachy (I normally never get headaches), brain fog and irritability.

Thanks in advance ladies :)

Hi Em,
Your previous diet of sugar and yeast was probably quite good at feeding the yeast in your system - you've taken that away.  I would also imagine that the pro-biotics kill both yeast and bacteria - I know that I've been told that they would help me with  killing the unwanted bad bacteria in my system.  Thus, both of these things may be dumping toxins into our system - or die off.  I know that I"ve had plenty of the symptoms that you've described. I've also noticed, over the years, several people have asked your exact same questions about just a change of diet causing these symptoms - so, sorry, you're not special :) just one of us.

Take Care and welcome

Yep. Sounds normal for the diet? When is your appointment? It is very hard to stay on list 1 for a long period of time without herbal support from ICAMA to help with energy levels and other things. What probiotic are you taking?

They are also going to give you herbal support for the irritability. Hope you are eating some starches and fats with your meals. Lots of grass fed butter.

Thanks for the input ladies! Yes Mimi, I'm eating red meat every day and have been eating brown rice with at least two of my meals each day, sometimes with all free.
I have been eating organic ghee instead of butter... do you think this is okay? i haven't seen anything about ghee on this site but figured that it was not that much different to butter, apart from having very little lactose, so thought it would be okay.
My appointment with Boaz is not until December 5th as I am flying over from Australia and cannot get there until then as I have to wait until my university exams are done.
I have progressed a bit through the diet as realised it was probably not a good idea to stay on List 1 for too long without herbal support. I am now sitting on list 2, but have also introduced a couple of things from List 3: almonds and cashews and seem to be doing okay with these.
i am guessing Boaz will make me start the diet from the beginning again though when I have my appointment with him, but I'm okay with that.

I haven't been snacking at all, just eating three squre meals a day so I wonder if a couple of snacks would help with my energy levels?

Uh oh! NO GHEE! Ghee is not allowed until near end of treatment. I am not sure why (nutrients are too concentrated) but it can really aggrevate symptoms.

Please do search the site because there is more here than you think sometimes!!
Switch to butter and refined (NOT extra virgin) olive oil.
I hate to say this, but I would not eat nuts or any foods on list 3 if you are symptomatic. These foods (especially nuts) can increase inflammation and cause some of the constant symptoms you are having, even in small amounts. When your body is ready, these foods will be fine. You may not notice an immediate reaction, but since you are symptomatic, I would avoid. No need to snack if you are doing ok on 3 good sized meals. But snack of hard boiled egg and veggies would be good if you are hungry.

ALso, if your probiotic has vitamin C in it, I would stop taking it. Any probiotic you are taking can inadvertently increase inflammation. I personally would not take supplements if not in treatment.

Thanks Mimi, my probiotic is by Bioceuticals, it doesn't have any Vitamin C in it, just pure probis thank goodness... I have been on this probiotic for about a year, but I may consider stopping it once I have finished the bottle, and either start the Natren probiotics, or just wait until I see Boaz.
Oh I am shattered about the ghee, I love it! Never mind though, grass-fed better it shall be, thank you for the hot tip :)

I thought I had searched the site but obviously I had not as I just did a search of ghee and saw several posts, including one by Matia cautioning about this. I really have never noticed it flaring me at all and always felt it was pretty safe for me, but I will take it out anyway just to be cautious :)

Dr. B has written several posts about eating foods of the lists. I think there is a post about "food does not bother me" which you might read.  I was trying (Not very well) to make the point that just because something is not flaring you, does not mean it is not bothering your gut or contributing to overall inflammation.
I will give you two examples.
I had a weird sx for months early in treatment. Very distracting. My butt hurt (rectum area) almost every day. I finally had a bladder flare at 6 months in treatment, and when I stopped using my topical acne medication, my bladder calmed down, and the butt pain disappeared over night. I was "tolerating" my acne creams for 6 months, but really, they were adding to my issues and hindering my progress.

Recently after having a good spell, my bladder took a wrong turn again. In discussing foods with Dr. Brizman, we realized I had been drawn to some slightly aged/stronger cheeses (1 year old cheddar, aged feta and smoked mozzerella). This cheese might be ok for some people on list 3 or higher (I am on list 3) BUT because I have a yeast issue, it is feeding my yeast problem and she told me to steer clear.
So just because something is not bothering you, I still would not eat it if it is not on the list unless you can talk to the doctors first.
