Rapid Weight Gain

Well it's official - I've gained 25 lbs in 4 months!!! I am sick over it and scared!  At 5' 2" it's really noticeable and uncomfortable. Of course the majority of it is in my boobs, butt and thighs - I literally look like a cartoon character as I have a really small waist to begin with.

Dr. Matia thinks it might be thyroid related - which I agree with - something hormonal has gone way out of whack!! It's not water really and it's not constipation either. We thought it might be stemming from a recent discovered magnesium & Vitamin D deficency but supplementation has not helped at all I'm gaining faster it seems. I do excercise and for the past 2 months I even count calories - it's something completely out of my control - urrrg.

As soon as I'm over this vertigo/dizzy/head cold thing - we are going to add back Siberian as she feels it helps the thyroid.

Any thoughts, experience would be really appreciated.

Thanks Claire C

Claire, I wish I had some great suggestions and thoughts, but I don't! I am so sorry you are dealing with this. Beyond frustrating!!! I can't understand on this diet how can have such issues, but I agree it must have to be a thyroid imbalance. Did the Dr. also run all the thyroid hormones the T3, T3 reuptake, T4 and the the antibodies? I have the antibodies for autoimmune thyroiditis and my thyroid hormone levels are bouncing all over the place, currently hyper side of the spectrum and I have read this is all part of the hormone imbalance that takes place with autoimmune thyroiditis. I am on Siberian right now too. I hope this gets better for you soon. Hugs!

Thanks Christina - it is awful!! I feel so self-conscious :(
No just had the basic TSH, T4 free and T3 free. My primary ran them. I don't see him for another 2 weeks - then I can ask him to run more and I'll report back to Dr. Matia. It just keeps on piling on which is so cruel. I'm basically grain free due to sensitivity, hardly eat starches and don't eat fruit - you think I'd be a stick!
T3 and T4 are low - TSH is within normal range - who the hell knows what that all means! I think I'm going to ask him to check for B Vitamins too.
Thanks for the support as always :)

SO frustrating!!!! It is not fair that you could eat this diet and gain weight.  (although you do at least look a bit like Jessica Rabbit - i think I would gain it all in my belly)

I don't know that much about thyroid but I remember from my friend's issues that the regular docs do not do the right tests.(Normal range????)There is a site called "stop the thyroid madness" That I think my friend said was better as far as info- but i can't totally vouch for that. Also, Chris Kressler has some info on his site. I wonder if you could go to a more open minded Dr to get a true full battery of tests. Might cost you some money.

I would think what it probabaly comes down to is the original issue- something is deep down firing off wrong and Dr b is trying to get to the root of it all. Doesn'tmake it less annoying or upsetting though. And it stinks to have your clothes not fit .((((HUG))))

Claire!! I know this is not funny, but i am still laughing. Dolly- circa 19 84? I've been there too when I first started doing a more weston price type diet except I went overboard with the sourdough bread and butter.

but you haven't done a thing to gain this weight!!! i  know you guys will get to the bottom of it.

Hi Claire,

This resonates with me. I lost a significant amount of weight when I first was ill - I had just been pregnant (and always put quite a bit on when pregnant) so I lost all of my pregnancy weight plus more - 24 KILOS in total to be precise. I lost it very quickly. However, as I have recently got better, I have put it all back on again, plus more. It's become such as issue for me. I am tall but am significantly overweight. It's horrendous. I have not been able to exercise much (at all) because my knee and elbow joints are painful, and because of fatigue but I am not completely inactive. I work, run around after four small children and am generally increasing my activity levels every day. However, I just can't get the weight off. It's become evident to me that it's a problem and that something has gone wrong. Even when I eat tiny amounts, I still don't lose any weight. I don't like sugar so never eat sweet things. I occasionally eat crisps but THAT'S IT. The rest of my diet is as Matia recommends - and I just do not lose anything, ever. I had thyroid function tests when I was first ill (and am aware of how inaccurate they are) but haven't really considered thyroid function. I think I'll go again and get it checked out. I haven't really mentioned it to matia because I thought that if only I ate a little less, I'd lose it. However, I have recently been very careful and have lost nothing. I currently take Siberian as part of my protocol anyway but will def ask Matia at our next appt.. about this. I am (sadly) relieved that I am not alone!

Vin43 yes please do tell Dr. Brizman. She does occassionally ask me about my weight and so there must be some things they are tracking in regards to that! I have noticed that while I don't gain weight, I have increased exercise and it has not made a difference at all in the extra weight I have, whereas before when I exercised more it would come right off. Also my right knee and heel do hurt so it limits what I can do but I do an on line Barre class called Barre3 it is fantastic and can be modified for knee pain if Dr. B approves. I do feel better mentally when I do it. Also keep up the volume of veggies even as you watch your portions. You don't want to starve your body, or it will slow its metabolism to compensate for the lack of calories. Stick with the ratios Matia recommends and keep a little fat in there too. Very important.

If we don't excel at health, the only other option is disease.

Thanks for your post Vin!!! I truly appreciate it! It is so frustrating!! I know it's all part of the imbalance somehow but geez there's gotta be something!!! There is one other girl too who emailed me...and I've seen some older posts on this too...so we are not alone!!! Yay! I already always feel like the odd man out - lol!! Yes I'll defintely post if I have any breakthroughs too. Right now I am eliminating all cow dairy and sticking to goat/sheep. I've had Celiac since a child and I know casein can be tough on that too...so maybe...who knows??
