Cheating on the diet

Just wondering how many of you truly stick to the diet with no cheating?

I am religious about it and I am still on list 1 but I was wondering if everyone else follows it most of the time or maybe cheats a little here and there.

What happens if you try something on list 2? If so, what happened?

What a great question! Honestly, I cheat every once in awhile. I laugh at that though because I think of cheating sooo differently than I would have a year ago. I now think of "cheating" as eating a strawberry or eating an almond every now and then. Before I would have thought it meant cheating on a diet... like snarfing a Blizzard or a Big Mac:) Now that would never cross my mind. So, yes, I have that coveted item from a higher list every now and then, but in my defense.... I think it is a lesser crime:) lol

I'd say I stick with the diet 98% of the time. I cheated last month when we went away and ate out a lot. I had some hush puppies, calamari and a glass of wine. I think I wanted to know what it would do to me. I felt a little worse then normal but nothing terrible, a 3 for me when I am normally a 0 -2. It is hard but I also know the better I am at sticking to the diet the quicker I will get better and the better I will feel over all.

It is so hard to stick to the diet.  I sometimes would cheat on something from a higher list.  I have realized time and time again that it is not worth it.  I feel like it does set me back, and I get very mad and upset with myself and feel guilt. The longest i have gone without cheating at all is three months, but when I do cheat I let it get to me mentally and I shut down and feel horrible about myself. I have just begun a new routine....I have started keeping a journal and I mark off the days as they go by that I have not cheated. It helps me to see the days crossed off and makes me less likely to mess up when I see how far I have come.   Also I have tried to turn my negative thinking to positive thinking....instead of saying "I can't eat that" I say " no, I don't really want that", that way I have the power not the food. Also I used to get so jealous of other peoples food and would think “how come I can't have that yogurt or fruit, it is healthy, it is not fair!!" NOW, I say “well it may be healthy for them but not for me." Right now I try to think of foods on lists I cant have like a sugary dessert ( bad for me)." It helps me cope. This may not help anyone out there struggling, but I thought I would share. I love food, but I also love my health and my life, and I don't want food to control my happiness and health. I want to be in control of my happiness and I can be. I know we can all get through this, and it feels good to be apart of a group that communicates and understands. I think of everyone with IC as my family.

Wow- really? I am like a nazi about the diet. Who knows? Maybe it is better to be a little more chilled out.
Portia- don't beat yourself up. This diet is tough. I wouldn't think that one sliip up could ruin everything anyway. Think about the cumulative effort. I also think you're on the right track with changing your thinking and how you word things.

Blondy- I am not sure about list 2. My symptoms are so up and down it is hard for me to tell. I did add a little bit of cooked carrots and seemed fine but when I tried cheese, I got bad. Of course I also get randomly bad a lot. Matia says that when I start having longer good stretches it will be easier to tell how food is affecting me. I was super sensitive to food before I was in treatment too.

The reason why I asked is because let's say you try something on list 2 or 3 and seem to do okay, is it cheating? I am not sure...

Good question. I asked Matia about this sort of but I'm not sure I totally  understand. For example- i was fine eating oats and coconut milk before I went to see her but apparently they can cause issues that you aren't even aware of. That is what is so tricky. FOr now, iam just taking it slow.

I have been in treatment 7 months and on list 3. I didn't cheat for a long time then started having a lot of muscle pain that is still going on. I think just the sadness of not being able to move my arms around like I used to drove me into cheat mode. I cheat like once a week now. I know it's stupid but it's just so hard! I don't have any bladder pain or frequency anymore so that is to be celebrated but the muscle pain and finger twitching is still there and driving me crazy! Meh!

Your picture always makes me smile Lee Lee.
So sorry to hear you are having muscle pain! What does Dr.B say about it? Is it IC related? I hope you feel better soon. Sounds like you have made great strides in 7 months regarding your bladder. Yay!

I'm guilty of cheating too.  But the things I cheat with are almond milk, bananas, cherries and on a couple of special occassions I have eaten apple crisp and a mouthful of icecream.  I never feel any different after eating these things, just really guilty.  I've been with Matia for 4 months and although I feel somewhat better I still have a long way to go.  Food for me has always been a weakness but I've improved so much.  I used to love processed food, cookies, cake, loads of breads, cereals, fast food and now I am happy with healthy foods I just miss variety and I think that's why I slip.....I'm so bored with the diet.  I am on list three and do get a lot more variety which has really helped but I do miss certain things as I'm sure we all do.  I think we just have to do the best we can everyday and keep our goal of one day being symptom free as our target to help us get through everyday.

Shebly, it sounds like you have made so much progress phsycially and mentally thus far. That is great!! Man that is awesome also that you don't feel much different from eating those things.  I am on list one but I can’t tolerate grains or salt so when I cheat I do rice with salt and mozzarella cheese and avocado.  That is it....sometimes a little almond butter in plain fage greek yogurt but for me it kills me!  I am on day five of no salt, no carbs at all and no eggs.  I think it is key for me because I feel so much better. I am little nervous when the time comes to try and eat salt and grains.  I did list one for three months without a slip and when i added salt it still got me!! I don't get it. I have tried pink Himalayan, realsalt and table salt.  I have not heard from too many people they don't tolerate salt. I am really just realizing that everyone is so different and that no matter you can't get down if other people are moving faster or can tolerate things on stages you cannot.  I mean, the symptoms for everyone are so different that the treatment has to be also. Everyone will make it though. I just can't even express how happy I am to have found Matia, and now it is my job to pick up my end of the deal to get better. :)

Have you tried Celtic Sea Salt.  I eat this and Himalayan Sea Salt without any problems....the only thing that kills me is any form of dairy.

Really if I could eat from list 3 at this point I'd feel like I was feasting. It is so boring to be on list one and I am a good cook but I have lost ,y mojo as far as being creative goes

Shelby- how did you know to move up?

Deir I just posted at the same time as you. haha. I feel the same way. :) I would freaking LOVE to be on  three!!

Hi,  I moved up when Dr. Brizman told me I could.  Recently she added beans, raspberries and almonds/cashews.  I'm not having any problems with these foods.

Here is another diet consideration... how many of you are able to include 50% veggies at mealtime? I have a tough time with this and I am sure it is an important goal for healing. If you are successful at it... any tricks?

I keep frozen spinach on hand and microwave it for a min in the morning and put it in a cheese omlet, it's really good. I really like broccolli so sometimes I will make a bowl and have it with scrambled eggs in the morning. I do eat veggies at every meal but sometimes it's maybe 1/3 veggie, 1/3 protein and 1/3 starch.

She told me to do 1/3 of each but maybe it is because I am nursing.

I make scrambled eggs in the morning with zucchini, brocoli and a little tomatoe.  There quite good.  I eat a huge salad for lunch with a little meat and rice and for dinner I eat meat, potatoes and large portion of veges.  I have a question.  How important is it to eat raw veges?

Christine222's picture

I heard it's good because of the enzymes in them. I eat a raw green pepper and a cucumber every day.

According to Dr. B eating raw vegetables is a necessity.

What about Garden Veggies supplement? There are others in Whole Foods. It would be so easy just to take one of those.
Btw, I do eat raw every day. I love salads. Well, what I call salad is lettuce, cucumbers, sea salt, and olive oil. Every day, sometimes several times a day. Cucumber is the most IC friendly veggie (at least for me).
I've been looking for IC friendly raw snack, no luck so far.

I never ate salad in the beginning because I hated the taste of just olive oil on the lettuce. Once you are ok'd to have some greek yogurt you can use that to make a creamy dressing. I mix it up with sea salt, pepper, a bunch of herbs, especially dill and just a drop of half and half or almond milk to thin it out, it's great on a salad.

LeeLee's picture

Christine can you give me the precise measurements you use for the dressing? I'm such a terd with cooking if I don't have exact recipes.

Christine222's picture
Christine222

Precise measurments??? That made me LOL but I will try! Ok for just one salad I would use 2 - 3 tbl spoons of greek yogurt and a splash ie 1 -2 tbl spoons of 1/2 and 1/2 or almond milk, then I would put in a shit load of pink salt.... is that an actual measurment, I am not sure but I like salt and my BP is so low that I throw all caution to the wind. Then I dump in a teaspoon of dill, a few grinds of crushed pepper, a few shakes of garlic powder, onion powder and and other spices I feel might taste good... go ahead feel adventerous! It's not ranch but it really is good if you prefer creamy to oil on your salad!

hahahah shitload is DEFINITELY a measurement in my opinion. ;)

Thanks!

It is extremely important to eat as many raw veggies as possible because the more the veggies are cooked, the more nutrients are gone. So if something is completely steamed or scorched it basically has no nutritional value. If you guys have netflix I higly recommend watching Food Matters. It's a great documentary. And if you are a parent YOU MUST watch Obesity: Killer at Large. I don't have kids but I still really enjoyed it though. It will make you appreciate our diet so much more. I watch them both every few months to remind me on the importance of what I am doing!

She says 1/2 cooked and 1/2 raw.  I'd assume this is because while the enzymes are more present in raw veggies, they are also harder to digest.  Note, most of us have insufficient good bacteria in the small and large intenstine--those bacteria are important for digestion.
That said, I'm lazy with the cooking, so I often eat a lot of raw veggies.
When I do cook them, I like to roast them with olive oil and salt.  I call it my vegetable junk food.  On list 2 its super good with roasted onions and brussel sprouts.

Some vegetables are hard to digest raw. They are easier to process cooked. I don't feel well after eating raw celery, parsley, or onions. That may be the reason why it is specified on list 2 that onions should be cooked.
