Hi All,
I've been away from the board for quite a while... But I wanted to share my good news! I'm pregnant! I hesitate to share this now, because I'm really early yet, and my chances of losing the baby are probably still very high, because I'm only 5-6 weeks along.
But, I decided to come on because I'm worried about my supplements, and worried they may cause deformities in the baby in these early stages of development.
I'd love to hear from anyone who has been through a pregnancy with Matia.
Currently I'm taking all the natren probiotics (not worried about those) and both the veggie and fruit Juice Plus formulats (again not worried about those)
There are 3 supplements I'm on that I'm very worried about:
Siberian Ginseng (1 pill 2x daily)
Spirulina (1 pill 1x day)
Chlorella (1 pill 1x day)
SIBERIAN GINSENG: I'm taking siberian ginseng 2x daily - The bottle gives strong warnings against the use of this supplement during pregnancy. Online too, I found a lot of information suggesting that siberian ginseng (as opposed to American or Canadian Ginseng is very unsafe especially in early pregnancy. Matia assures me she has used it with her pregnant patients many times, and I trust her. But the life of another person is a big deal, and I'd never forgive myself if taking that caused the baby to either not survive or live with some lifelong health issues. Some sources suggest that the siberian ginseng isnt' as much the issue as the stuff that might be included in the pill but not mentioned, as it isn't regulated. I take a no-name drug store brand of Sib Gin, and have for a couple years now in treatment... It's never given me trouble, but I don't knwo if this is different?
SPIRULINA: Some of the info I have found says that spirulina, because it is algae, has large amounts of mercury (the way fish would) and is therfore unsafe. Other things say its fine. As with so much of the information on the web regarding herbal medicines, I'm not sure whether I can trust the source or not. It's also considered a strong cleansing herb, and therefore there are concerns that the toxins would reach the baby. On the flip side, it's high in b vitamins and iron which are both good.... Some people online are somewhat blaming miscarriages on their use of spriulina... Matia says she has never used spriulina on a pregnant patient before.
CHLORELLA: This is also an algae. It's supposed to be a strong detoxing herb - removing metal toxins in particular. Some bring up the same concerns (what if the toxins end up in the baby?) but other suggest that the chlorella binds with the metal toxins and help you expell them. One study suggested that babies of women who took chlorella during pregnancy and lactation were less susceptable to environmental toxins, but I can't find anything to validate the study's claim or to look up the actual source of it.... Also, chlorella is supposed to be rich in folic acid -- which for sure is a good thing, since Matia said taking a folic acid supplement would be very detrimental to me.... so I have to get it where I can. But again the bottle gives strong warnings against use during pregnancy... Matia has never used chlorella for a pregnant patient before.
Since Matia has never used Spirulina or Chlorella for pregnant patients before, I'm suspecting there will be little that can be said on that issue, but I'm REALLY interested in any comments anyone has about their own pregnancies with Matia, and about any of those threee herbs in particular.
Thanks for any words of encouragement or advice on this issue... :)
Hope everyone is dong well!
Erin
Congratulations on your
Congratulations on your preganacy! I'm sorry but I can't answer your question since I don't take those things. I have read a lot of your posts and I was wondering how you have done with treatment. is your bladder feeling better? Thanks!
Congratulations! I would not
Congratulations! I would not take anything until talking with Matia and doing my own research.
Congratulations!!
Hi, Sorry I don't have an answer for you....but would like to say congratulations!
questioning herbs
Hello Erin,
Congratulations! I'm so happy for you.
While I can't really answer your exact questions - far beyond having kids. I do know that being comfortable with taking things that you have questions about is something that I truly understand. Due to my medical history, I'm not supposed to have anything that has any estrogen like properties. When I first started this I didn't realize that so many herbs have these qualities. During one of my worst periods for anxiety, it dawned on me. I had this huge questioning melt-down with Matia. What I can tell you, is that she was respectful of my concerns and the decisions that I made regarding my research and her information. In the end, I stood by my own decision and she did find an alternative for me that helped control my anxiety.
All my best,

Congratulations with your pregnancy, that's wonderful
news for you!
I wonder when you (and others) know/knew that you are
ready for pregnancy? I'm also in treatment for some time now and feeling a lot
better, but still have periods of die-off and increased urethra burning. On the
bad days I realize that I'm not feeling well enough yet... I hope you also had
a lot of improvement during treatment and that you will have a wonderful
pregnancy :)
I don't know about the herbs during pregnancy, but
Matia can certainly give you the right advice on this.

Congratulations. Check with Matia about your supplements.
Doing pretty good
Hi All,
Thanks for everyone's well-wishes!
To answer to how I've been doing:
My bladder feels pretty much normal most days. Every now and again (usually predictably with certain points in my cycle) I notice a twinge here or there. I imagine I can still improve from here, but I'm happy with my progress.
On the other hand, I have developed a few other issues that are troublesome -
About 9 months ago I was diagnosed with a hip labral tear. That's a tear in the cartilidge of my hip. And unfortuneately, because cartilidge is non-vascular (no blood flow) it will not heal. I've also been told I'm not a condidate for corrective surgery -- not that I was super keen for surgery, but it was my only option, so now I'm kinda high and dry. Matia says she'll be able to help the pain, but progress on that has been very minimal.
I also developed carpal tunnel/tennis elbow repetative strain issues very suddenly around the same time I was diagnosed with the hip tear, which interferes sometimews with work and life, but I'm managing.
Matia and I had discussed whether I was ready to have a baby, and she was happy with my bladder progress but really hoping to get my inflammation issues (she feels the tear and the rep. strain are related to toxins and inflammation due to IC) down further. But she figured I'd be able to try in a few months -- maybe the new year.
I was excited and willing to wait.... (although anxious that the ok date would continually be pushed back) and then it just sort of happened... So I guess it's meant to be!
I was concerned that Matia would be upset - that she may feel I wouldn't cope with the pregnancy, but she told me she's happy for me, and she thinks it will turn out fine.
About the supplements:
I have actually discussed this in detail with Matia.
She feels strongly about the siberian ginseng being ok. And if I continue it, I think I'll try to get her brand instead of my local drugstore one, just to ensure that it's a pure and relaible brand. She has used it many times with pregnant patients... so I was wondering if anyone on the board was among those 'many.'
Because she hasn't given the spirulina or chlorella to other pregnant patients, she's not sure. She feels they would be fine, but doesn't want me to go beyond my comfort level. She sees some validity to the mercury arguement but isn't making a final call
So, essentially it's up to me for all 3 of the ones I'm questioning... which is why I thought I'd ask for advice.
Thanks for all your thoughts so far,
Erin
Hi Erin, I understand about
Hi Erin,
I understand about the pain, I went tubing ten years ago and smashed my hip and tailbone area on rocks. I have been in pain since. Sitting is very uncomfortable for any length of time. Although I didn't break anything I caused a lot of tissue, muscle and tendon inflammation that has to this day not completely gone away. Also 18 years ago I got tendonitis.....I went through all the anti inflammatory meds, cortisone shots, physiotherapy to no avail....finally I just decided that this was my life. It has gotten better on its own over the years.....however if I type to much I still get sore. I'm sorry to hear about your pain.....but you never know, your pregnancy could make things a lot better. For me when I got pregnant 25 years ago it put my IBS into remission for many, many years! I hope your pregnancy is a joyous occassion for you!
Kim

CONGRATS!!!!!!!! I would
CONGRATS!!!!!!!!
I would keep researching about te algae. Look on Dr Mercola, and other alternative sites. I am a breastfeeding counselor and according to the bottles -you shouldn't take ANYTHING while nursing but the reality is you can. My feeling is that it is very similiar with pregnancy. Check out Mothering.com or other more alternative/natural pregnancy sites. I'll see what I can dig up about it. I like to look this stuff up!
*I just quick looked it up on Mothering and one of the posters who I know is a Homeopath (almost used her for IC before I found Matia) says that basically they are chelators so they do help nasty stuff get out. generally the wisdom with that is not to START during pg or nursing but if you've been doing it all along- you should be ok.
Also- if it really worries you- maybe stop unitl you are in the 2nd tri?
Erin- search "spirulina
Erin- search "spirulina chlorella safe during pregnancy" and then read the posts from Mothering.com. There is some good info.
