Steroid Eye Drops

During my eye surgery, my eye was injected with steroids two weeks ago. It has been slowly absorbing into my body.  Now I am having bladder pain for the first time in four months.  Does anyone have experience with steroids?  Since I am a first timer on this much pain, is there anything I can take if the pain really gets bad.  What about a heating pad?  Does it help.  I need my sleep.  Is the steroid taking its course and being excreted out my bladder?

Liz,  I use a hot water bottle at night to sooth my bladder.  Heating pads emit electrical signals that are considered harmful by some people.  Matia posted on this a while back.  When I used a heating pad, I found that it was comforting at first and then my pain levels went up.  I am not sure what to take for baldder pain as I am not starting treatment until next week.  Your steriods could cause an increase in bladder pain since the body's systems are interconnected.  I would definitely send Matia and email if your discomfort persists.  I hope your pain symptoms go away quickly!

there isn't anything to take for the pain your herbs should be helping try an extra dose maybe. I have done that. Take an epson salt bath you can microwave some raw rice in a sock if you don't have one of those rice or beanies. They hold the heat better and longer then the water bottle and is softer too.

Thank you for giving me HOPE and that there is this wonderful network of people helping people.  This pain hit me out of the blue. My first thought on something new is will it ever stop hurting.  At first, Matia thought it might be a reaction to one dose of Juice Plus and steroids. But now I think it is only the steroids getting out of my system.  I have become depressed about dealing with it.  Everyday there is always something new.  Now I can look back how much more into gratitude I should have been for the months of little pain, but alot of symptoms, like constipation  (gone),chills/cold, edema in ankles (lessened), rash on back (gone), brain fog (gone), bloating (gone) I have beendoing so well in 11 weeks since starting with Matia. Thank God I can see my progress. I had alot of emotional issues yesterday.  I know your emotional/mental state exacerbates it.  I have alot of support with my friends.  And I have this wonderful ic support group.  Nicole, after reading your share on 4/29/09 (can't stand this) you have given so much more courage beyond belief.  When I tell my boyfriend the pain, I know he can't relate.  You all can.  This morning it is a little better.  It is sooo important for me to lead a normal life.  I will take this window of opportunity to go with my boyfriend to our local farmer's market as we do every Sunday morning.  We have a friend who has a booth selling unbelievable eggs, chickens and ducks.  Matia, just e-mailed me, and said that the steriod messed me up.  I hope it is very short term.  Just a reaction.  Some have blogged before on pain that this is a sign that the toxin is getting out of the body.   Any words of encouragement?Liz

I am sorry that can't say I have any direct experience with steroids but in my experience with accidentally putting things on my body or in my body that turned out to be mega painful by way of the very painful/ irritating ingredients- and worried that I had done something totally bad to my system and also worried about how long it was going to hurt- I c an say safely that I beleive within a short time your body will process the steroids and excrete it out -its unfortunate that our wounded place is directly a major eliminating organ- so of course everything we expose our bodies too- its going to be carried out by the bladder. the pain will go away and you should not worry yourself about it. In the beginnig of treatment which I think can be considered for alot of folks to be the first 10 months to a year or longer depending... I could be wrong... but still the things that cab be intense and senstivity inducing can flare you for alot longer then when you get exposed to them later if you react at all. for example it took me a week to recover from one day of sunscreen on my body- I had really horrific pain from that  cause of all the werid chemicals in that stuff- so I imagine that in short time after your body has processed the steroids things will be feeling better. I kind of just had to wait it out but it did get better no problem. I think the only thing that has ever helped me is hot water in baths or showers. it was my only consistent releif from pain. - the herb dosed helped somtimes. then again it was awhile before I realized I should let Matia know when I was mega uncomfortable as that could be key to helping my treatment unfold. hope you feel better really soon!Mary

Liz, I am a pharmacist and I can tell you: your pain is NOT going to last long. The problem with steroids is that they are meant to act as immunosuppresants to temporarily "calm" your immune system after surgery, during chronic inflamation, etc. But in our case, suppressed immune system is bad news! The good news is that through the eye your systemic absorbtion is minimal, I don't remember exactly, I think about 9%. You reacting this severely to it because you are too early in treatment and your bladder is not able to handle much. But since this systemic absorbtion is so small, there isn't really much to excrete. Hang in there, it is going away shortly.
