What to do with food poisoning or flu

Hi Everyone,

My husband and I got hit with either food poisoning or the flu in the middle of the night last night. Being on this program completely undoes everything I know about how to deal with this.

In the past, I would have drank water, and later progressed to gingerale or gatorade to relplace my electrolytes. Then I would have eaten dry toast or soup. Because we can't have canned soup, I don't have any options where that's concerned and I don't think I'm ready for toast.

I e-mailed Matia for advice, and was very fortunate to get a reply quickly. She suggeted taking goldenseal and 4 drops of oil of oregano every few hours and nothing else.

But I just can't hold that down.... I've replied letting her know that and I'm sure she'll get back to me, but I wanted to know if any of you have been hit with this kind of thing while in the program, and what you did to deal with it?

last time i had food posion i did just the goldenseal i imagine the oregano is giving you the burps and is why you can't keep it down. i ate the health valley chicken broth in the can and made egg drop soup with it. i chop up some spinage very fine stir one egg and bring the broth to a boil. then stir the egg in and put the spinage in . i would say this is two servings bc its very filling and i don't think you wil be able to eat the whole thing. if you can have toast maybe toast with it. some spelt or rice. you two can share it and it only takes a few min to make this. i always keep those health valley chicken broths on hand just incase something happens.

If you have pill curing, it helps with nausea.  Also you could use the homeopathic remedy Arsenicum Album.  It is recommended for food poisoning and also anything to do with vomiting and diarrhea.  Homeopathics do not react with any other medications.  Hope you both feel better soon.

Matia says not to take ANYTHING including homeopathics without consulting her!  So, I would take Nicole's advice and make the health valley chicken broth and if you tolerate the meadow valley spelt bread, that too.

Poor thing!  Feel better!!!

Hi All,
Thanks for the advice:
Nicole -- that sounds like a great soup recipe. I'll have to try it. Dayan and I both ate spinach the night we got sick, so I'm not quite to the point where I'm willing to eat it again (not sure what caused the issue). But it sounds like a great easy recipe. I can't get Health Valley broth where I live, but maybe I can find an equivalent.  I will also try to take the goldenseal without the oil of oregano, because I think you're right about what I'm reacting to.

Clueless: What is pill curing?

Matia did recommend the ginger tea. I haven't been able to try it yet, but I'm going to try today. She said it would bother my bladder, but to be honest with the way I'm feeling I'm not sure I'll notice.
I really appreciate your help!

Erin you could use anything your comfortable with as far as a veggie i just use the spinage because it's not gassy and easy to cook.
as far as the ginger goes sometimes it bothers my bladder and sometimes i am fine with it. i think it just depends on how i am doing it is more of an herb then a food yano how sometimes a formula is ok and sometimes not i think the ginger is like that for me.
if you can't get the health vally then i am sure there is some other kind. i just got a bunch of canning jars for soups it's always nice to have some stock in the freezer for those er days.

Pill Curing is one of Matia's herbs she uses for nausea.  It is one she said to have on hand.  Also, I might add, that Matia has always been okay with my using homeopatic remedies.  They are very gentle.  You could ask her.

Hi Clueless, ( ummmm, that sounds bad!, how do I make this sound better?....)
I'm guessing that Matia has OK'd you specifically to use homeopathics but not to us IC'ers as a whole. There have been some things on the list that were an absolute no, but she told me that in my particular situation, I would be OK with it. For example on her list she says no to all herbal products, creams and lotions. There is a product that is herbal and does have some strong properties but I seem to do OK with it, so she told me that I could use it once in a while.   I have asked Matia repeatedly if it was OK to use homeopathics and she has always told me that it was out of the question. I struggle a lot with sleep and so many people swear by Calm Forte homeopathic that I have been really tempted to try it. I asked Matia, and she did not even need to think about it, ... no.  At first, I thought it was more because most homeopathic tablets are made in a sugar base or the tinctures are in an alcohol base which are obviously 2 big no-nos, but then she clarified to me that it is more then that. I even wanted to try using some aromatherapy and that was a no-no also, with only lavender as an exception.   I know where you are coming from because I have had  very good experience with homeopathics and I found it hard giving them up. Like I said before, I think that Matia made an exception for you and for the most of us homeopathics are not allowed.  I will not be able to attend the support group call and I would love it if at some point I could get a more in depth explanation somewhere or somehow of how it is that homeopathics interfere with the program?  If someone could ask that question for me, that would be great to know.

I was going to say pill curing as well.  Ask her if it is ok.  If you don't have any, talk to her about it at your next appt and ask if you should have some on hand and how much you should take if something happens.  I think she listed pill curing in a blog entry about stuff to have on hand for winter, so I would think it's ok, but ask her specifically when pc should be used.  are you feeling any better?icnot4me

Sadly not really better yet (I've never had a stomach thing last this long!!)
I'm not tossing my cookies anymore thank goodness, but I still can't eat any solid foods to speak of. Whatever got me, totally did me in. The occ health nurse at work thinks it was Norwalk virus -yuck!
I had a consult with Matia on Wednesday night, and completely forgot to ask about pill curing, but I'll ask about it tonight during the support call.
Thankfully ginger hasn't been bothering my bladder.
The food we eat is not in line with what I'm used to trying after being sick. I had some gingerale -- bad, I know, but I was so out of energy and nothing would sooth my stomach. Gingerale always worked for me in the past and it helped again.
That's interesting about the homeopathics, I hope we can talk about it tonight.

Just wanted to say I feel for you... so sorry to hear you're still not recovered yet.... food poisoning is the worst.  I really hope you get better soon.
When I got it, I didn't eat anything when my body didn't feel ready ... I was a little worried about it but it worked well. Then I slowly started chicken broth and some spelt toast.

Sorry I didn't read these posts again until this morning.  That would be a good thing to discuss at the support meeting.  Matia has never told me not to use homeopathic remedies.  I have used them for about 20 years before I started with Matia.  I've asked her if it was okay to use them, and she was always fine with it.  I don't use them on a daily basis, but I do use them when I am having a crisis of some kind, like for instance, I get really bad sinus headaches and sometimes I get migraines.  There is one remedy in particiular that greatly helps with the headaches and nausea/vomiting.  I have also had to use another remedy whenever I have had gum surgery.  I would not hesitate to use homeopathics for a few days short term while also on the herbs.  I do realize they are in a lactose base.  If Matia has specifically told some of you NOT to use them, then you should follow her instructions.  It would be good to see what she has to say if someone wants to bring it up at the meeting.
