For decades it has been standard procedure to give antibiotics to patients with mitral valve
prolapse before dental procedures even as benign as cleaning. Approximately three years ago, the American Heart Association ruled that this practice was no longer prudent or necessary.

I have been surprised lately because I have had many patients tell me that their dentists are
still requiring them to take antibiotics before their dental work. As all of you know, it is
my practice to suggest that antibiotics are only used when absolutely necessary. So, this
is an area that is no longer necessary--per Western sources.
