Success Stories

Hi everyone,

I am not yet a patient of Dr.B's but I am hoping to start treating with her soon... before I make the appointment however, I feel I really need to hear some success stories. I know there is a link to some success stories on this site, but I guess I wanted to hear some 'active' ones from ladies on the forum.

I definitely feel that this is the right treatment for me, as I really want to heal this disease naturally, and not just cover the symptoms with pharmaceuticals... however I live in Australia and hence it is going to cost me a lot of money to travel to Dr. B- I guess I just need to be 100% sure I am making the right decision before booking the appointment... and hearing some success stories would definitely help!

I am 25 and have had IC for just over a year after many UTIs and antibiotics, as well as continuous birth control for approx 6 years. I am currently taking Elavil 10mg at night but really want to get to a point where I do not need it.  I am planning to make an appointment in December as I would not be able to get there until then.

Thanks in advance and happy healing everyone!

Hey - I'm new on the boards and in treatment but I feel like I've already had a lot of success. I started working with Dr. Boaz two months ago and immediately felt relief with just the diet. I'm 27 and got knocked out by IC after a ton of antibiotics for various bacterial infections(bronchitis, etc.). I was working out of town and saw 4 doctors all of whom put me on MORE antibiotics even though I showed no sign of bacteria during what I assumed was a UTI.
The first month was all over the place with my energy levels and irritation/pain. It was still worlds better than the way I felt before starting treatment. I'm happy to say that the past month has been really good (knock on wood). Most days I feel normal with hints of urgency here and there. I'm definitely fortunate in that sense (knock on more wood...)
I know a lot of people who are recovered/in remission don't get on the boards anymore. In fact I had a party a couple weeks ago and a not-super-close friend told me that his wife had IC and also saw Dr. B! I was shocked since this condition seemed so foreign and scary and overwhelming and awful. I called my friend's wife the next day and talked to her about it. Her story was SO encouraging. She is two years out of treatment - it took her about a year - and doing amazing. She never even thinks about it anymore and had a hard time even remembering what it was like. It's incredible how the human body forgets pain. She followed the diet to a T but she also figured out what works for her - she still won't drink coffee and takes a daily probiotic but she's back to normal life.
She also told me that she avoided the message boards completely because she found it to have a negative effect on her mental state. It's true that a lot of the time when we get on the Internet it's because we're looking for support during a difficult time rather than sharing our successes during a great time. There's too much life to live for that!
In any case - I believe it's worth whatever money you can spare for the trip. It's your health - without which nothing else really matters. And I applaud you for seeking out alternative treatment - the ability of our bodies to heal themselves is beautiful and the Brizmans seem to realize that we just need to give our bodies the chance to heal.

Wow thank you notbeyonce! It gives me so much hope to hear stories like this and I really appreciate people like yourself taking the time to tell them :)
My UTIs started around the age of 19 (looking back I realise this was around the same time I started taking birth control). I had a few a year from that time on, always treated with antibiotics. Then in June 2012 my cultures started coming back negative and I was diagnosed with IC by cysto/hydro. I took a few different types of BC, but I do recall that when I changed to a particular brand (around 8 months before coming down with IC), I felt awfully sick for the first few months of taking it- awful nausea, stomach pains, bloating and extreme fatigue. I stupidly ignored it and pretended like everything was fine. After being diagnosed with IC I stopped taking the BC pills and haven't had a period since (it has been a year)- so I am hoping Dr.B can help with that also!
Anyyyyway... I've also noticed that Matia says sushi and mushrooms are big no-nos... ugh! I was the queen of sushi for years before getting IC... I was having sushi probably about 4 times a week... and I mean the raw fish kind. I also probably had around 5 cans of tuna a week at least... I thought this was being healthy but now realise that is not the case at all!

Anyway, I guess I just wanted to elaborate on my story a bit more as I thought some people might relate, and wanted to introduce myself a bit more :)
I have heard so many good stories from Dr.B's patients and although I know it will not be a quick fix, I really want to heal my body completely, not just cover up the symptoms with medications for the rest of my life. I really feel good about taking this path.
Thanks again,
Em x

Hi Emma.  I don't have time to write an in-depth response, but I think you will be comforted to know that MANY people have found their healing answer through Dr. B, myself included.  Here is the link to some success stories.  http://www.icama.org/success-stories

I hope you find comfort in reading those..

Emma, I'm more than happy to email with you.  I'm not finished with treatment, but am much improved compared to when I started.  I'm 2 years in with still a ways to go, but I'm more than happy to chat with you.  Your story kind of reminds me of my own.  I was also 25 when I got IC, and was on birth control pills for 7 years before that.  Those things really messed me up!  So glad and thankful to have found this treatment!

Hi Emma,

I've been in treatment for 9 months. When I came to Dr. B I had done quite a bit of healing with a naturopath. I no longer had level pain, but still constantly felt like I had to pee. My frequency was terrible and urge never ending. I 'm happy to say that I am doing great. My symptoms are a 1 or 2 compared to a 10! She saved my life. I can now drink one cup of coffee a day. I also eat tomatoes! Two things that I thought I had to give up forever. It's not a quick fix and it takes tons of work, patience and faith. Xxxoo

Hey hey,

I've been complaining a lot lately on the facebook page but I have seen a ton of improvement. I'm only 4 months in and it's been HARD but after starting the diet the vv that I had been experiencing for two consecutive years disappeared. It flares MINORLY every now and then and is so mild and short lived that I barely notice it. It used to be so bad that wearing underwear was the most painful experience in my life.
Also, the diet cured me of a three month cough. I was coughing up huge amouonts of phlegm, randomly throwing up after meals, and suffering from TERRIBLE debilitating nausea, dizziness and fatigue after meals. Once I started the list 1 the cough went away, gradually, and so did the dizziness. I swear, I would feel like I was going to pass out after I ate. I still do have SOME nausea, but usually just around my period and the fatigue is the same.
It can be frustrating at times because the better you get, the better you want to be. haha. We get impatient when we start to see improvement. I actually posted a message almost EXACTLY like this one before deciding to start treatment. I was in a similar situation. I was living and working in France and decided to quit my job in France and hop a plane back to the States to be unemployed and start treatment. I was terrified and unsure how I was going to manage financially.
I don't regret it at all. I complain sometimes and obviously wish it were easier and faster, but I know that this is working and that is worth all the money in my bank account for me. Especially after attempting so many other treatments. It hasn't been easy for me, but every time I write out or talk about all of the progress I've made I can't help but feeling ashamed for how impatient and doubtful I get... the proof is right in front of me!
Hope this helps. Also, everyone says treatment lasts between 1 and 5 years usually... but just because you're starting treatment doesn't mean you have to stay in it if it doesn't work. Since starting treatment I've read the stories of progress of all of the women on this page and on facebook and it's been really astonishing to witness the improvements in them and in myself. It's undeniable. So I'd say, if anything, it's most definitely worth trying!
Good luck and keep us posted :)

Thank you so much for your honest and lovely replies everyone :)
Tinkerbell that would be great if you could email me your story and how you are doing today, I would absolutely love to hear it, particularly as it sounds very similar to mine :)
Hannah that must have been super hard emotionally to leave your job and come to the states for treatment, but good on you!! As hard as it was I'm sure you have made the right decision, it sounds like you are already on your way to healing! IC can be SO scary and make it SO hard to plan for the near future yet alone the distant future because you just don't know how you're going to be feeling/what you will be able to manage.

I filled out a new patient form last night so I am feeling very excited!
Quick questions for you all... I started on the ICAMA diet a week or so ago. I seemed to be tolerating the grains okay at first (I previously had not been eating grains for about 3 months) but now I think I may not be tolerating them very well... do we have to have potatoes if we aren't having grains? Or do you think it would be okay for me to just load up on lots of meat and veg instead? Have many of you found it eaier to heal without the grains?
Em :)

Hi Em!
So glad you will be starting treatment soon. Dr. B likes you to have some of these carbs to help give you energy. A paleo diet  (meat and veg) is hard to sustain without fruit. Can you keep in small amounts of potatoes? How do you kow you are not tolerating grains? Also, try Basmati rice or rice pasta if brown rice does not agree with you. Be sure you eat lots of grass-fed butter (e.g. Kerrygold)or refined olive oil and some fatty cuts of grass fed or organic red meat if you can.
The best thing I did when I started treatment was to read ALL of Dr. B's blog posts, dating back to 2008 and read her dissertation (maybe you already did?)

If we don't excel at health, the only other option is disease.

Also, I do a lot of research on Paleo, GAPS diet, etc.. and the hardest thing for me is to let go of my pre-conceptions about what I think is going to work regarding diet and just trust Dr. Brizman. They have used this diet with a lot of patients and it works. Spelt is much easier to digest than regular wheat.  French Meadows Spelt Bread (ask your local natural food store to carry it) is a naturally risen spelt bread made with only spelt, water and salt. (No commercial yeast). this is pretty easy to digest when toasted. Avoid the one they make with seeds in it. If it is not on the list, don't eat it! :)

Thanks Mimi! You have no idea how much those words helped me :) You hit the nail on the head in terms of my concerns. I have also done a lot of reading on GAPS and paleo and I guess that's where my grain and potato fear comes from. I need to just trust Dr.B and remember that she has healed MANY patients with the ICAMA diet. Also, this diet is specifically designed for our conditions, unlike GAPS and paleo! I need to keep reminding myself of that! I do need to gain a bit of weight again and am hoping that doing so will help bring back my period which has been absent for a year!
I believe I am not digesting grains properly because I added brown rice in a couple of weeks ago (after having avoided them for several months) and have noticed that when I eat it it is complketely undigested in my stools (sorry if TMI). However, I have tried brown rice noodles and brown rice flakes and I seem to not really have this problem with those (I'm guessing because the husks are removed they are easier on my gut)? So I will just stick to the brown rice noodles and flakes and I will try the spelt pasta as you suggested!
What does Dr. B say regarding stock and broth? Is this a no-no?
By the way Mimi, I love your quote; "People who rush to get healthy often take the wrong path." This is so true and something I have come to accept and appreciate! I used to always look for quick fixes (medications) and am now so put off by them! I know the natural path will have its ups and downs and challenges, but I think it's the only way for my whole body to recover :) I now realise I have had weird digestive symptoms for a long time, probably since the age of about 19, I just somehow got it in my head that they were normal and now realise how truly not normal they are!!

yay Carey!!
Hi Em. Yes, I am 46 and I too have had digestive sx since age 19! Well, honestly the seeds of them started with my parent's divorce and my mom's mental illness showing itself when I was 7. Dr. B's dissertation talks about a commonality among many IC patients: lack of bonding with or controlling mother (In my case I lost my mother to mental illness). this sets up digestive problems that are deep rooted. I always thought my mild IBS-c was NORMAL. And now know it is not. I have a normally formed BM 2-3 times per day. And now I know how to raise my girls to have normal elimination so that they can stave off chronic illness. This is a HUGE gift from following this protocol.
No bone broth at this stage of treatment. I think when your gut lining is more healed you may be able to add it in at the end of or after treatment. The gelatin and vitamins are too strong for our damaged immune system and our body over-reacts to this.
Don't be afraid of a little Basmati white rice. It is low-ish glycemic index and much gentler on the gut. Ask Dr. B about brown rice Mochi for baking (Grainassance) at WF. it is pounded as part of its processing so maybe this helps with digestion?? White rice but not jasmine or sushi rice would be good.
If you want soup, make pureed veggie soups with appropriate veggies and butter and sea salt. No broth yet.

If we don't excel at health, the only other option is disease.

Hi Emma,
I'm 26 and I've had IC for over one year, also from recurrent UTIs, the pill and antibiotics - oh and I'm Aussie too!
Feel free to PM me if you want to talk :)
