Hi all. I've been a patient of Boaz's for a little under a month now, so still very new to all of this. The strict diet is difficult, and although I'm mostly craving sweets, I've been starting to have some pretty intense cravings for bread. I had initially decided not to bother trying to find any of the yeast-free, sugar-free breads (initially convinced that such a thing couldn't even exist), as all of my attempts to seek out such "breads" were a complete waste and yielded some very odd looks from store workers...even those in health food stores.
Thankfully, I've found a recipe online for spelt bread that satisfies the list 1 limitations, and have ordered some spelt flour off of Amazon. It will be a few days before I can make it, and was wondering if anyone in the LA area has had any luck finding spelt or kamut bread? I'd love to be able to satisfy my bread cravings in the meantime, if possible! Boaz told me that it's extremely hard to find these products. I've read about this brand called French Meadows, but have come to understand their products are no longer offered in most health food stores?
I'm not sure how many of you even live in LA, but any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you :)
French Meadow makes a spelt
French Meadow makes a spelt yeast free sugar free bread & I believe whole Foods carries it:))

French Meadow makes a variety
French Meadow makes a variety of breads so read the label VERY carefully to be sure it only has spelt, salt and water. If you have a small health food store you can ask them to carry it. You have to ask the store because some distributors periodically drop this bread because of course not as popular as others. It has a sourdough flaver and sometimes I want sweeter so I make my own. YOu can make your spelt bread as soon as you go to Whole Foods! No waiting required. It takes 10 minutes
3 Cups spelt flour (Bob's or Arrowhead from WF)
1/2 -3/4 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
1 TBS olive oil (not extra virgin)
1.5 cups spring water
Mix dry ingredients first then add wet. Pour bread dough/batter into a loaf pan. Cook at 350 for 30-50 minutes. My convection setting cooks the bread faster and makes it rise a bit which is nice. Slice it AFTER it cools a bit. I double toast mine in the toaster. Yum!

Thanks for the idea of making
Thanks for the idea of making it homemade! That sounds delicious.
I was ordering French Meadows
I was ordering French Meadows but I think they are discontinuing the Spelt bread!
Did you call the company?

Not directly! I had been
Not directly! I had been ordering it off Amazon and then it vanished! I called a local Sprouts and the Santa Monica Co-Op and the people at both those stores told me FM was discontinuing the spelt bread :(
I don't know if you have a
I don't know if you have a spouts but they have spelt bread and spelt torillas. I know trader joes has spelt torillas too. I also like the brown rice bread at trader joes, the one with the purple on the label. I asked Matia if I could use that rather than spelt as spelt was making me sneeze and cough. She said yes. I also discovered spelt pretzels at Gelsons, pricy but delicious..
I've never heard of Sprouts,
I've never heard of Sprouts, but we do have them here, apparently. There's a location pretty close by my apartment, too, so I'll check it out. Thanks!
I'm interested in this rice bread you found at Trader Joe's...it's both yeast and sugar free? I haven't been able to find any rice bread at Trader Joe's that was both of these things, and I've checked several times. Is it a Trader Joe's brand, as well?
I contacted the company
I contacted the company directly and they have discontinued most French Meadow product. They emailed me some alternative suggestions but all have yeast and sugar. Thanks for the recipe Mimi!
Anyone tried this bread. Go
Anyone tried this bread. Go down to the sourdough spelt, it's only three ingredients, no sugar.

Looks like the same
Looks like the same ingredients that were in the French meadows bread. I was sad to see for myself yesterday that they had discontinued this bread. Not that I can eat right now, but hoping for the future. Thanks Christine!

Just wanted to make a general
Just wanted to make a general post in this thread, and I apologize in advance if I sound condescending at all, but I've just about had it with all the frustration I've experienced trying to locate any of these "breads!"
First of all, I might not have made this clear enough in my inital post, but I am still on list one. That means these "breads" have to be both yeast and sugar free. I've expressed my concerns with Boaz about even calling something that's yeast-free a "bread" to start with. This seems to imply that there is something like this that exists in a risen, traditional form and packaged in the same way that we're used to purchasing bread. Any bread that doesn't contain yeast is going to look very different than say, regular whole wheat bread. Then, to simply list words like "spelt" and "kamut" after "yeast and sugar free bread," might further imply that simply locating bread that says "spelt" on the packaging is going to satisfy these constraits. IT DOES NOT. This is especially annoying to those of us who have never heard of spelt or kamut to start with!
To the ladies (or men? I assume most of us are ladies, lol) who suggested that I locate spelt breads at health food outlets such as Whole Foods, Trader Joes and Sprouts, thank you very much for the suggestions. However, I do hope all of you were NOT still on list one when consuming these breads, because they are all full of problem ingredients! I haven't bothered with any of the breads from Trader Joes, because not a single brand I have been able to find that does not contain yeast, and very few do not contain sugar. I have never been able to find spelt or kamut bread at Whole Foods, and there are no "yeast-free" brands, either. I went to Sprouts today, and was thrilled to have FINALLY located spelt bread in an actual health food store, only to find it's full of yeast, vinegar and honey. I only ended up buying it because my boyfriend wanted to try it.
To those who posted recipes, thank you, because it looks like this will be the only way I can satisfy any of my bread cravings, although I'm sure whatever I produce isn't going to resemble any sort of traditional bread I'm used to. Hopefully, it will at least taste good!
Again, sorry to sound so frustrated, and maybe I'm just taking things a little too literally, but I just do not see the point in calling something that is yeast-free a bread! Or, if you're going to go ahead and call it that anyway, why not also explain that it's nothing like traditional breads that use yeast...aka, almost ALL BREADS?!
Traditional sourdough does
Traditional sourdough does not contain yeast and it is absolutely a bread. I buy Berlin Bakery Sourdough Spelt. Ingredients: Spelt, salt, water. I have only recently started eating it and it is delicious.
For almost 2 straight years I ate Ener- g brand yeast free sugar free Brown rice loaf. Only tastes good toasted.
The recipes are for more of a quick bread type thing. Delicious too.
Hang in there- we are all on the same team! IC sucks! But we have hope of recovery .
I did just see that link you
I did just see that link you posted earlier, and you're right, it does satisfy all of the constraints. Thank you! However, I thought sourdough did typically contain yeast? I've certainly never had sour dough bread that didn't contain yeast, and yes, I do read the labels. Even a quick wikipedia search for sour dough bread cites yeast as a primary ingredient. The bread you sent me a link to seems to be an oddity, although I'm very happy it exists!
I just want to reiterate that I really hope others who have posted in this thread talking about all of these breads from health food outlets are aware that the vast majority of them do not satisfy the constraints! Just because a brand is labeled as a spelt bread does not make it both yeast and sugar free, and I got the impression that some people may unfortunately be eating products that aren't safe for them at this time.
I am hanging in there! Thankfully, my IC is mild, but it is a very persistent case, nonetheless! Thank you again for your help and kind words. Good luck to you as well :)
SpiralRice, you have come to
SpiralRice, you have come to the right place to vent. I was in LA last winter and only 1 store in the entire area carried the French meadows spelt bread and it like a race who could get to the store when the shipment arrived. This bread that Christine suggested above can either be ordered off line or can ask a local store to order it by the case for you and will be shipped to their store for you to pick up. None of this is easy. You will no longer have the convince of shopping at one store for all items or least I can't. So, vent away we all understand and I am still mostly on list 1. You will learn the tricks, hang in there!
Haha, oh boy...and now French
Haha, oh boy...and now French Meadows doesn't even carry spelt bread at all! Fortunately, I can buy just about anything I need at Trader Joes that satisfies list one constraints, but I guess finding the right bread will never be an easy one :/ Oh well! Currently preheating my oven to have a go at baking some yeast free sugar free spelt bread of my own. No idea how it will turn out, but I'm hopeful, lol. Thanks for your kind words, and good luck in your healing process :)
Hi
Hi
Thanks Ally & Mimi for posting their spelt recipes. I live in Australia & it is also a frustrating exercise finding acceptable bread, that I went without. I made the recipes because it looked simple & for a person who hates cooking at the best of time , a little enjoyable.
i am now in heaven because I can now have eggs on toast & not just naked eggs on a plate for breakfast.
Thank you :)
