HI Mrs. A
Sorry to put you in the header. But since we can't contact people directly through the website, I thought I would ask this way! My most noticeable intestinal symptoms are bloating and gas. I don't usually have any pain, and I eat all foods on list 3 and none of it bothers my bladder. I don't eat much dairy. I have a splash of cream in my coffee, and a little yogurt or butter. sometimes a small slice of provolone cheese. Lately I only have the gas after dinner. I do not have any carbs at dinner. Dr. B says it is hard to untangle bloating but we will get there and I am on SF and she is sure the bloating is from dysbiosis. It has improved slightly, and is usually at its lowest in the week before I ovulate. Then it comes back pretty good after ovulation. Did you ever have bloating? Were there some starches that you tried that you noticed did not make bloating worse or better? I rarely eat gluten now. I just tried pinto beans. They don't hurt my bladder at all, nor do black beans. Thanks for any thoughts!
Hi Mimi, yes I have had
Hi Mimi, yes I have had bloating and gas...tonight! I have been doing so good in that department, but tonight both are making me miserable. I am pretty sure it is my lovely 1 T of yogurt, because the pain under my right rib has increased since I have been on
it as well, plus a canker sore. Clues from my body. So I would say that being off dairy has helped me to calm things down, but I sure would love to get it into my diet. I am going to go back to what I know which is no
dairy and these carbs: butternut squash, beets, navy beans, red lentils. Those are the carbs that help me the most. I know how frustrating it is with bloating and gas. I was not having a starch at night either for a long time to help keep it calm, because night times were the worse for me too. And I have to be so careful with fruit. I can only eat very little. Usually 4 small slices of an apple. It's all a matter of balance for me every day. The right starches, but not too much. Very limited fruit. And maybe very limited yogurt...still not sure if I should take it out or maybe 1 T every now and then. What do you think Mimi? I hope I have been of some help. :)
Thanks Mrs A. If Dr. B thinks
Thanks Mrs A. If Dr. B thinks it is ok, then maybe try to keep the yogurt in for a while and your body will adapt? It can be a really versitile food. Maybe this thread will help someone some day so I guess I give a few more boring details. LOL. This has literally been driving me MAD for 2 years. The only time I started getting some relief was 4-5 months ago when I started SF. Maybe later she will add back digesta-lac and other probiotics and that will help? Before when she tried d-lac it did not help at all. My MIL's bloating was resolved in 3 months on Natren and she is 68. GRRRRR. The only time my bloating is better is a few days after my period, until I ovulate. Then it comes back. That tells me it is in part tied to hormones. Dr. B says it is one expression of the IC and is fed by hormones. It is bad at night even tho I dont eat carbs. During the good time of month it is NOT bad at night, it is the same. I have gas mostly after dinner. Dr. Brizman told me yogurt would be good for my digestion so I eat a serving of it every day. I cut out dairy for 2 or more weeks and did not notice a difference, except, as you know, if you are one that likes dairy, it is not that fun to keep it out. If dairy is bothering me Dr. B says it is because it is pasturized and when I can do raw it won't be an issue. I don't really like raw butter tho. I am going to ask her about raw cheddar. The only fruit I eat is 1/2 cup of berries, and sometimes a little green apple. I did add 1/4 to 1/2 pear in place of the berries on some days. She did not seem to mind that. It never bothers my bladder? I dont think rice cakes are that good for me so I don't eat them much now, maybe once a week. I don't know what carbs to eat. I seem to tolerate sweet potato ok. Did you post specific questions at the SCD facebook group? I have tendency to constipate (although magnesium helps for now) and gas. NOT ever diarrhea so not sure how this group will help. Obviously we can't follow the intro diet and I think the relience on honey in that group is really nutty--I don't get it at all!! People talking about packing honey-carmels as snacks???? Anyway, not sure how to use that group for support. I do want to avoid grains for a while. I don't think cutting all carbs is good for my IC. But I dont know which ones to eat. Dr. B told me last call to try Quinoa which does not appeal to me but I will try. Thanks for reading.

Hi Mimi, I am much better
Hi Mimi, I am much better this morning! I think I figured out my problem, I had homemade chicken broth two days in a row, and then two meals in a row. That just doesn't work for me, but I haven't made that mistake in awhile so I forgot. So I am pushing on with the yogurt. :) I have never posted on the SCD facebook page, and there are soooo many things that would be bad for us with IC, but it's their carbs that have helped me considerably. I learned from them to have the stronger carbs in the morning such as navy beans, then lighter carbs at night such as beets. Also I learned from them to add in healthy fats each meal, so I try to have a couple teaspoons of olive oil or avocado with at least a couple meals a day. This all seems to be helping me in the last five months I have been doing this. Also I learned to cook everything right now, including my nuts as my gut heals. The only raw thing a day I have is 4 small slices of apple. I have been thinking, Mimi, of what you might try since you tolerate everything from list 3. Try using navy beans and red lentils as your only starches for a week. Take out the splash of cream in your coffee also for one week, no cheese for one week, but keep in the yogurt. Maybe you will feel some relief. I do soak my beans and lentils, so that might be significant. But I know quinoa was really hard on me, as well as rice cakes and rice products. And we seem to share some symptoms, so I can relate to your frustration. I do know that the last five months of eating the specific carbs have also helped the arthritis in my hands and cleared the problem with my scalp. My daughter has IC too, but she doesn't have the digestive issues I have, so she is fine with list 1 carbs and nightshades, which I have to avoid. I can tolerate nuts, but she struggles with those. We both have noticed though that too many carbs can cause us
both problems in different ways. I love sharing information with others on this forum with the hopes that down the line others will learn from what has helped us to get better. Love to you Mimi as you
unravel this puzzle. I really believe it will get clearer.
Mrs. A. Thank you so much for
Mrs. A. Thank you so much for your thoughtful reply! I had been thinking a similar thing of taking out all dairy except yogurt! That is a great idea. Dr. B did say I could try raw cream so maybe later I will add that in. Dr. B and I did talk a while about carbs today. She said with my bloating, brown rice would NOT be good, but white rice (a small amount) or potato, or a small amount of yams/alternating would be ok. Also, squashes! Acorn and spaghetti and the round yellow summer! I am excited about those and will think about navy beans too and adding in fats at each meal. I wonder if quinoa pasta would be easier to digest? I usually have full fat yogurt at breakfast or eggs, and I usually have avocado with lunch and/or dinner but I will be more mindful of fats and having the heavier starches earlier.
