C-section vs vaginal birth

Hi All,

I am doing some research into why my gut health has deteriorated as I have always been healthy, apart from the occasional sugar. I came across some very interesting research, where it is thought that newborns delivered by c-section are more at risk of autoimmune conditions than newborns of vaginal birth, due to the missing out of the benefits fromf the mothers vaginal bacteria which is high in Lactobacillus. From my understanding this is the bacteria that fights candida. I though this was curious as I was born through c-section.

Were you girls and guys born through natural birth or c-section?

I was born via c section. My sister was born vaginally and also has an autoimmune condition.

Hi Roo,

I've read about the c-section/vaginal birth gut microbe connection before too and found it to be very interesting.  I think it could be one of many contributing factors but probably wouldn't be the sole cause of IC for someone.  Have you read Dr. M's dissertation? It's dense, but I found it really helped me understand the myriad factors that can contribute to IC. Sometimes it's hard when you look at your own clinical picture and you can't pinpoint what it is that contributed to your condition, but I honestly think it's such a complex web of factors that we may or may not be able to unravel an exact answer.

Oh, and to answer your question, I was born vaginally and my mother is a very healthy person.
