How to manage the flight to LA

Hi everyone,

This website has been immeasurably helpful for me. It is so wonderful to find out I'm not alone in suffering with this confusing and painful disease that none of my family or friends can relate to or understand.

I will be seeing Matia for the first time in two weeks, but I am worried about how to make the flights there and back as unstressful as possible. I am coming from Philadelphia, PA, and so I will have 6 hour flights each way. My main concern is how to get classified as "special needs." What do you say when you call the airline in order to be allowed to bring a cooler and food, or even classify as special needs? I will be flying alone. Luckily I have a friend who lives 3 miles from Matia's office, so that is where I will be staying while out there, and am already familiar with the area in terms of finding food at Co-ops and Whole Foods.

Has anyone packed the probiotics in a lunchbox with an icepack, and then packed the lunchbox in a checked bag? Do you think that would work if I am unable to get clearance to bring it on board with me?

Any information is most appreciated. Thank you!

You can can call the airling ahead of time and tell them you have special needs. If you request a weelchair even if you can walk just do it you will skip security they will still check your bags but you will not have to wait on that line wich can be hard on you bladder if you have to pee. Also they will sit you first get off first and you will be next to the bathroom.
I usually put a water on my checked bag in zip bag so that when i get off the plane i can drink it. IF you tell the airline a head of time you need special water for your conditon they may alow you to take it on. I buy a 3 oz plastic bottle and fill it with my special water put in zip block bag and put it with my food on my carry on. They don't have a problem with you bring your own food. Make sure all your supplemets stay in there orginal bottles this makes it much easier. they should not have problems with any of this.
Good luch on  your new journey and welcome so glad you found Matia :)

i fly fairly often and have actually not had any problems bringing probiotics with ice packs in my carry on. i save the ice packs that natren sends when i order my probiotics and just throw one of those into a large ziploc with my bottles of meg and bif and stuff it in my carry on. then when i go through security, i just take it out and throw it in the tray that goes through the xray machine. half the time it just goes through and no one says anything. the other half, they pull it out, ask me what it is, say they need to run a quick test on the ice pack, which they do. and in about 30 seconds, they okay it and hand it back to me. so, don't stress about that part too much. you can also put your pros into prescription bottles (assuming you happen to have some empty ones lying around at home) and they question those even less because you just say they are prescriptions that have to be refrigerated. sometimes i get a mild eyebrow lift from the TSA when i just use the original natren bottles because they are commercial not prescription. they ask what they are and i say for digestive issues. that's it. conversation ends there. so again, don't let this part of travelling faze you.have a wonderful trip and meeting with matia.

We are starting this healing journey together!  I fly out to see Matia for the first time tomorrow.  I have a four hour flight.  I was going to tell the airline that I had a disability and needed to be near a washroom.  If they don't help me out, and I do not get an end seat, I am sure the person on the end will be frustrated with me getting up over them every 30 minutes!  Hopefully they will be kind enough to switch seats.  I do not know anyone in LA and I have never been there, so for food I am going to rely on rice cakes and cucumbers and maybe some chicken I can just eat that without the bun from a fast food place.  Its only one day, so it wont be too big of a deal.  I am not taking any probitocs or supplements yet until Matia tells me what to take, so I am not worrying about the ice packs.  For Water, I like Nicole's idea.  You are very lucky to know someone there and to know where the healthy food is!

here are a list of places you might find helpful they are all very close to the office.
you can walk to the ralphs i park there when i have gone to the office at times so I don't have to pay unless I can find legal street parking. IF your not renting a car the ralphs will be your best bet. THere is also one near the air port but by cab that will end  up running you about 20 bucks.

velocity cafe (cyber cafe) 3.5 miles2127 lincoln Blvd.Santa Monica310-314-33682dollar hr internet or free with drink They have plane green tea. and coffee

also if you need to get fast food try to find an in and out burger. Get a burger with lettuce no animal sauce no bun and no cheese. then just eat your chips with it and veggies. that will be your most IC friendly fast food place to go. IF you tell us where you are staying other places can be mentioned. I used to live in LA and I am sure some of the other locals can help out.

I will be staying at the Holiday Inn Express.  I have a cab scheduled to pick me up to take me to Matia and back..I am not even going to try to walk around city I am unfamiliar with. Great tip on the fast food place, do they have one of those in the airport?

you staying at the holliday in LAx if so there appears to be one just outside your hotell. The ralphs that is in walking distance to Matias office really is right around the corner. I used to park there before going in because it was free parking. There is also one just outside your airport. If you not going to go to one I would put some essentials in your checked bag.
8824 S Sepulveda Blvd, Los Angeles, CA‎ - (310) 645-2035‎ - 1.6 mi NW this is the Ralhs grocrie store  just outside the airport.you will pass this on the way to Matias and back so you could just have your driver take you there. You could boil some eggs for the morning to have with your rice cakes, lunch do in and out maybe ask for extra lettuce so your kinda getting a salad. you could spinkle your rice cake on it. If you pack some extra veggies in a little ice pack for your trip you will be doing a lot better. THat is if you really don't want to go to the ralphs. Honest though it's so close that you really should get yourself somethings for your little hotell fridge I bet that there is a microwave in there too. The flame broiler is also just outside LAX and you can order steamed plane white rice and veggie bowl that is boiled veggies no sauce is used. However you can't order there meats because they are pre seasoned. The veggies are broccolie, cabbage , carrot and green onion. you could just pick out the onion and carrot.  and put it on your rice for dinner. The patties at in and out are kinda small I usually get two btw. I would also just get your dinner patty at the same time that way you can put it all in your room and you don't have to go back out. That area isn't the best at night. Also if Matia puts you on goldenseal just get it there for now and I would not order them from Amazon takes forever i have had bad experiences with this and I know others have too. I use IHerb or Matia to order .Good luck tomorrow and have a safe flight.

for all the tips!  I am so ready..mixed emotions. I know this is goodbye for sugar in my life.  And it feels kinda like someone close to me is dieing.  But I know Death brings new life...I'm ready. Finally.

Good luck on your flight tomorrow! I know what you mean about giving up sugar. I can't even go to the grocery store anymore; it's just too depressing to see all the food I can't eat. I make my boyfriend do all the shopping...I feel so lucky he agrees to do it!
In LA I have found that there a lot of food options for people like us (on restricted diets). There are many organic, all natural restaurants, which makes it easier to get plain food.
For the flight, I was thinking of packing some salads and lettuce wraps (I shred chicken and wrap it up in iceberg lettuce leaves, and sometimes add rice noodles too)...but then it occured to me, are we allowed to bring forks on board nowadays? I suppose I can just pick one up once I get through security...so that solves that problem.
And thank you all for all the tips! I am starting to feel less stressed about the flights.

I am sitting here waiting to get on place with Southwest Airlines to see Matia. I wanted to tell you all I did was go up and tell the flight attendant I was disabled and she asked no questions and gave me a card to get in first to sit.

Murphy325:I saw her yesterday and truly she knows IC, better than anyone I have ever known or heard.  SHE GETS IT:)!!!That is so hard to find!  Good luck and make sure and write all your questions down because the time goes fast!Good Luck!  Remember just tell the airline up by kiosk you have a disability and they do not ask any questions, they will give you a pre-board pass.  I sat in the first row with leg room and was right by the bathroom:)
