I took Benadryl for years off and on before going to Matia, and at the first appointment, after taking my full history, she said that Benadryl was definitely one of the factors in my case. Every time in the beginning I tried going back to the old habit of taking it, it used to KILL my bladder. I can tell you that, unfortunately, I am absolutely sure that Benadryl would not let the herbs work properly, and just like wrong food, would definitely hinder the process of healing, but I am afraid it is even worse than food :(. Does Matia know you have insomnia? This was actually one of the first things to improve, once I gave my herbs a chance to work.

Benadryl played a huge role in the severity of my IC.  I took it for two years to help me sleep.  At the time, I was teaching in the inner city and needed rest.  Benadryl dried out my bladder greatly increased my pain over time.  I was on it for only two months before coming down with IC symptoms.  Unfortuenlaty, I didn't make the connection at the time.

Gosh, I just took a benadryl like 5 min. before reading this.  Oops.  I've taken it in the past, but only one at a time and not very often at all.  Doesnt bother my bladder but I guess its not healthy after reading the posts.  Does anyone know if there's anything thats ok to take for sleep???  I know when I dont get enough sleep I get even more run down and my bladder gets worse...

I know you said it does nothing for you, but for other people reading this I wanted to tell you Matia told me this is a no no for the begining in IC, it causes a terrbile flare in me the next day after I took it.  It is way to strong I quess.

Thanks for the tip on Benadryl. I have been taking it nightly since September 24th when it all began. It makes sense that it would dry out the bladder. I too am up every couple of hours to pee. Most nights I have a rough time getting back to sleep. The Benadryl initiallty gets me to sleep but it doesn't keep me asleep so I usually lay awake...And then I saw someone tried Melatonin and had a bad reaction so I won't be trying that. It is frustrating for sure.
