Low Iron Absorption

I recently found out I have extremely low iron absorption levels. Has anyone else had this? I am getting iron infusions done because my body hasn't tolerated iron supplements very well.

Hi Lisa Ann

I haven't had it tested in a while. But likely for many of us it is low. could be for very many reasons. Did you get my Facebook message? Might have gone to your "other" folder. Sent you a book recommendation. Have you been tested for SIBO? Low Iron is common with SIBO and many of us have SIBO as part of our imbalance. I know Dr. Brizman does not use this test, but it might be helpful to see if you are malabsorbing carbohydrates and other foods so you can tweak your diet. Do you have any bloating or undigested food in your stools or diahrreah or constipation or heartburn or sinus issues?  xo Mimi

If we don't excel at health, the only other option is disease.

Hey Mimi,

Thank you for responding.

I am going to do a stool test with Genova. It's their GI Effects test and it is pretty comprehensive. My functional medicine doctor recommended that I do it.  I am also doing a blood test this week that shows vitamins, minerals, etc. Since my diet has been so limited for the last three years, I am hoping this will help give me a place to start in regards to expanding my diet.

I got your message, yes. Thank you for the book recommendation. :)

Hi Rachel Ann! I am the opposite, too much iron in my blood and high iron saturation. I don't know how I'm supposed to address it yet, can't cut any more food, but having such pain. Sounds like one option is have regular appointments to have blood removed to control the high levels of iron. Goodness the fun, maybe I can give you some of my iron!! Hope the infusions are helping. Thinking and praying for you always!

Rachel Ann, how are the infusions going? Feeling any better these days? Thank you, I appreciate it! A little update on me, more and more tests being run and we are getting closer to finding some pieces to the puzzle. Finally a Dr running the right tests and leaving nothing to chance. It is definitely an autoimmune disease, the two big ones at the top of the list are lupus and ankylosing spondylitis. Have one more MRI of my pelvis on Monday and surgery consult on Tuesday to remove my gallbladder. The crazy thing with my iron levels is Dr. M started me on artemesiae annua, or sweet wormwood, commonly used for cancer and malaria, because it gobbles up free iron. Guess what the treatment is for lupus? Anti-malaria drugs, crazy!! Hopefully, we are on to something! I feel like I am being beat with a 2x4 everyday! So tired of hurting everywhere all the time, so exhausting!!!

C, I'm so glad you are getting some answers! I am still trying to figure out what's going on with my iron levels. I have a couple of recommendations for GI doc's that I got from my neighbors. I wasn't too crazy about the one I saw a couple months ago. I had a stool test done by a functional medicine doctor and no blood showed up, thank goodness. But I'm wondering if I have a stomach issue because my stomach has been hurting a lot lately and I feel nauseous especially in the mornings. I'm wondering if I have an ulcer or something, but I'm trying not to guess before I see the doctor. The good news is that my bladder and vaginal pain has calmed down a bit lately, and I'm trying some new foods with success...finally! Yay!
