It seems that mainstream science is noticing what Matia has told us already! I was happy to see something like this in the New York Times:

As an aside/follow up to article, has anyone ever talked to Matia about fecal transplants?  I've had a lot of people ask me why I don't do this, and honestly I don't know, maybe because it is rather extreme and Matia favors a gentle approach?(Plus the gross-out factor is a little higher than usual...)

personally, i think most people are far more unhealthy than they realize--even the ones with the "right" mix of bacteria in their stools. this particular funding stream is also so new, that our understanding of how this works is reaaaaally in the beginning stages.  there could be issues with fecal transplants that are totally unstudied in terms of long term effects.  i was displeased that they don't mention the relationship between food and the microbiome--its like ohhh obese people are obese just because of these bacteria...their actions have nothing to do with the state of the microbiome itself.  in allopathic medicine, people have no agency in their health.  although, this is an exciting funding source, i hope more people with new perspectives jump in on.

I know this thread is very old, but I wanted to revive it bc I saw a fascinating article on "DIY fecal transplants": http://blogs.plos.org/publichealth/2013/05/29/why-diy-fecal-transplants-...
And on Matia's belief in fecal transplants, I found this comment of her from Oct 2012:
"It sounds like fecal transplants can work wonders in many cases, but, my feeling is that with leaky gut, it wont do the tick. I dont think the transplant of bacteria can repair the lining of the gut, which is the other very significant side of treating this problem. However, this is my opinion only, I have no way of knowing this in any concrete form." -Matia from this post: http://www.icama.org/blog-entry/microorganisms-and-modern-world
