Hello Everyone!

I have a new dilemma! I have dealt with TMJD for many years, but has been fairly pain free for the last several years. Unfortunately, today my 4 y/o niece was in town, and wanted to play hide and seek. When she found me she came flying at me and head butted my chin! I am in so much pain, and cannot bite down on anything without bringing tears to my eyes. I am trying to avoid pain meds, so living with an ice pack on my jaw. I am trying to live on a soft food, no chewing diet, and keep the appropriate proportions . I don't want to bother Dr. B, so thought I would ask for any suggestions anyone might have. I should mention, I am also battling a flare of IBS and nausea. My only attempt at food since the incident was almond butter, goat yoghurt, mashed avocado, and refried beans. Even that caused pain, and I am concerned with eating too much yoghurt because of the high content of natural sugar. I am currently not eating any grains, eggs, or chicken. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Haha Denise! Yes, my family always jokes, if I didn't have bad luck I would have no luck at all! Hope you are having a better day today! Sorry, Tinkerbell, in the midst of my pain I didn't ask how you have been coming along with your nausea? Hopefully feeling better! My jaw feels very sore and stiff today, but as long as I don't bite down not I am not having intense pain. So, hopefully each day will get a little better, and will be a ble to trial some solid food soon! Ugh!

Do you think you could manage some flaky tuna from a packet to get a little protein in? Something where you can just swallow small pieces but not have to chew.
Or sipping some vegetable broth perhaps? Are you allowed lentils?  You could blend them with an immersion blender in the broth. Are you allowed fruit at all?  If you could do some sort of smoothie with a little yogurt, avocado and berries or apple blended and maybe some almond butter in there as well...she mimght approve that for a few days?
I am pretty creative and I'm not coming up with much, especially with all the foods you are avoiding right now, it's tough! You poor thing, what a drag!
On another note, though, I would DEFINITELY contact Matia about this.  If she can't reply she won't right away. But this is a bit of an unusual circumstance I feel she may be able to help.

Thanks Sam! No fruit at the moment, was approved recently, but causes intense bladder pain! I will have to try the tuna and vegetable broth, good idea! Do you make your own broth, or buy it? I can't seem to find broth without added sugar! Yes, I am thinking will need to email. I don't want to throw things off with eating the same things and cause more problems.

I just thought of an idea.  I havent been on the site for some time and saw your post this morning.  When my son was learning to try foods as a baby, I would make him a simple recipe of pureed chicken soup:  chicken, rice or potato, garlic/salt and a veggie.  you can boil this and then puree it and eat it with a straw.  that way, you are getting nutrients in your body.
I have experienced TMJ duriing the last 3 months off an on and completely empathize with the excruciating pain.  It sucks down right as it also is correlated to migraines (at least for me they go hand in hand).
She told me its part of IC.  I actually had TMJ last night after an all day migraine yesterday.  The heat in SD is horrible, not as bad as the rest of the US but for me, I cant bear being outside in 82 degree weather, its an invitation for a migraine all weekend.  : (
anyhow, hopefully that simple recipe will help you get through this.  But I would definately email her.  I understand toughing things out and have told her in the past that I have been.  she said to me, there is no need to, just ask.   Thought I would at least help in that respect.
I will email the rest of you ladies later, need to get out and do some shopping before the heat starts up.

I use about 2-3 chicken breasts with the skin on and just the simple pink salt and garlic.  if you can tolerate other spices, do so.  I havent quite yet...

I use Pacific or Imagine brand broths. The veggie one does seem to bother me though sometimes bc of the spices in it but the chicken one is ok.. I haven't found a perfect broth but those do not contain sugar (I'm fairly certain anyway). Also, apparently Health Valley sells some good canned broth. I occasionally make my own in the winter after a roast chicken, but Matia seemed not thrilled with the homemade kind because it can be more intense and cause pain. It doesn't seem to bother me.

Thanks Adriane, very good idea! I will have to try maybe with beef and without the garlic, I don't tolerate chicken (mainly because they are grain fed or have been fed soy) or garlic either (the antifungal property is too strong for me yet)! Boo!
The heat and humidity have been awful around here, and also suffering from headaches, and yes maybe due to the weather. I do know my asthma is worse in this weather. Hope your migraine was better today!
Tinkerbell, so glad you are feeling better, and the tickle subsides in the next few days. I did find vegetable broth at trader joes without sugar or yeast, but i have not tried carrots or lentils yet, so not sure I should take my chances. I guess better stick with home made until I am given the go ahead. I too miss RP, recently taken off of it because of nausea and burning, but it tastes very yummy! (I have trouble swallowing pills so always open all the capsules)
Everyone has been so helpful. Thank you! I did email Dr B and she did approve eating yogurt for every meal for my animal protein if needed, so that was good to know, but we will see if my stomach can handle it! I ran out and bought a couple packages of salmon to munch on as well, thanks Sam! So glad to have the support and options you all provided! Happy healing to all!

Ohh so sorry that happened to you CPrince =( .... How about some mashed potatoes, or mashed up veggies... Can you have some sweet potatoes yet? I peeled then boiled some sweet potatoes, then took them out of the water, and added butter and salt. They were delicious.... Can you have Lentils?

Thanks Calieve! I am in need to change things up, having terrible indigestion, shearing heartburn and cramping/bloating intestines! I think too much yogurt for my body to handle! Yikes! I tried more solid food this evening and my jaw is very sore after that attempt, so hopefully better in a few more days! Keeping my fingers crossed.
I was trying to avoid mashing veggies, but think I am going to have to go that route. I am such a texture freak, anyone else have trouble with textures? I want to gag when eating yams/potatoes, and yogurt can get me going as well, just worried with mashing veggies I won't eat enough because of my aversion to the texture. Maybe I can make mashed potatoes with beef broth or veggie broth. Sweet potatoes/yams cause me pain yet, and have not tried lentils. Actually, I don't think I have ever tried them before. I will ask Dr B about them. Didn't think this diet could get anymore challenging then it already was. Oh well, I must roll with the punches, or head butts in this case!:)

I have had TMJ for years.  What really helps when it gets bad is physical therapy.  The therapist can do wonders for it.  Contact you dentist or a doctor and ask to be referred to a therapist who works with TMJ problems.  I wish you luck.  TMJ can get really bad to the point where you can barely get a spoon in your mouth.

Yes, I have already exprienced having my jaw locked for almost a year back in 2005. Dreadful, I couldn't eat without pain and could barely fit a spoon in my mouth. At that time I saw a maxillofacial surgeon, was fitted for a night splint, referred to PT and was basically told that down the line my  only option would be joint replacement. The PT gave be stretches and I had iontophoresis treatments, which caused a lot of skin irritation. With any bump to my jaw I have a huge exacerbation of pain/symptoms. TMJD is definetly not an easy thing to deal with, but like everything in this treatment trying to take each new challenge in stride! Thanks for all the suggestions. Nadia, I will have to ask Dr B about craniosacral therapy. I learned a little about this in my schooling and I think it would be interesting to take a continuing ed course in this.
