Grains??

Hi there,

So I re-read (for the trillionth time) List 1. I am not sure how well I tolerate carbs in general or grains. She says if a grain isn't tolerated take it out of the diet for up to 4 weeks and retry...

Before doing this I decided to try the grains and the proteins separately since I read that for people with GERD (like me) sometimes eating carbs and proteins in the same meal can increase symptoms.

I'm just a little nervous since I have lost a lot of weight, and no longer have any body fat to spare. Anymore and I'm skin and bones. If I have to cut out carbs from my diet I don't see how I'll maintain a healthy weight.

Has anyone else struggled with this dilemma? If so, what were the solutions/outcomes?

Any counsel is very much appreciated.

May we all be joyful and healthy,

Hannah

Oh, in addition:
For those of you who found grains intolerable, did you also find the flours and by-products associated with these grains intolerable?
Were there one or two you tolerated well?

Hi there,
GERD and refluxproblems were a big problem for me for many years, since starting this diet  all of this is  resolved. I  can not eat any of the grains, rice chicken or egg but potatoe is not a problem.
Also the by-products, anything with gluten in it is making me ill.
So I have to be really carefull what to eat. Since doing this diet I don't need to take anything for the acid-reflux because the symptoms are totally gone., Matia  told me that  a lot of her patients who are healed could eat the gluten and the grains again.

I too, can not tolerate any grains. I already have Celiac, but I can not do any other kind of grain either, including rice...ithey all cause me serious fibromyalgia type symptoms. Maybe someday :)
I can do potatoes though...so in addition to eating potatoes I add potato flour to things and fry vegetables in an egg and potato starch coating...to add the carbs etc.

Potatoes and butter on everything should keep your weight from going to low.

Excellent advice! Thanks so much ladies. Anneke, soooo relieved to know that you have found stability with your GERD... it's scaring me a lot right now since my symptoms are pretty sever. Low blood pressure, fatigue, and coughing ALL the time. It feels like my body isn't getting enough oxygen... WEIRD.
I seem to be having weird reactions to both butter and potatoes... so strange, but will try both on a later date (only have tried each twice. The first time both were good, the second time I had too many potatoes and perhaps too much butter as well?)

What a learning process :)

Be well ladies!

I know of one patient that wrote about not tolerating grains OR potatos early in treatment and two years later, she eats everything.
I also know a patient currently in treatment that had egg and dairy allergies and they are gone 11 months later...

If we don't excel at health, the only other option is disease.

Anneke,
So potatoe is the only carb you eat then?  I am interested because my daughter has a reflux problem.

Hello Hannah!
I have had, still having trouble with tolerating grains with reflux issues. I removed all grains for a period of time, but not convinced that it made things much better so added them back in. I still don't eat a lot of grains, difinetly eat more potatoes than grains for my carbs. I have found I have more trouble with rice flour than the grains themselves for whatever reason. Have you tried teff flour? I am mostly on list 1 and seem to tolerate teff the best, gluten free, yummy, and easy to bake with. Not saying a good option for everyone, but since you can't ask Dr. B yet, it might be worth trying to see how it goes!  I also had trouble tolerating butter, but found goat butter was easier on my system than regular cow butter and may help with keeping your weight up! The weight issue will not last, definitely eat more of what you are tolerating, and snacks are key! I think everyone has trouble with keeping the weight on when you first start treatment, a huge shock to an already unhealthy system that is not properly absorbing necessary nutrients! Hang in there! Wishing you safe travels and good luck with your move back to the states!
