Organic?

Me again:

I have been unable to find ANYTHING BUT extra virgin olive oil in France. The only time where I'm not worried about the quality of what's going into my body and they don't have the chemical substitute! The irony!

Have people been able to find organic virgin olive oil in the States? Also, how much does Dr. B emphasize the importance of organic? Is there a brand she recommends for olive oil?

I'm a little skeptical just because I really dislike chemicals at the moment, and realize that non extra virgin most likely means chemicals!

Thanks for your help :)

Hi Hannah
The issue is not organic (although I am sure Dr. B prefers we take in organic products whenever possible, if our funds allow...) If I am understanding your question, what you need is a processed "Olive oil" which in the states is usually called "Light". Even the light products have some extra virgin in them, so I think it is impossible to find a 100% process oil. The key early in treatment (from the little I understand!) is that we don't want to trigger more inflammation and that some foods that have more strength, higher vitamin content or omega 3 fatty acids will drive UP the inflammation. Can you find a non-organic, plain olive oil that is NOT labeled "extra virgin"? That is what you want. I wouldnt worry about the organic, but double check with Dr. B. I do not use organic olive oil, although fruites and veggies are mostly organic. Also, if this is not possible, can you ask Dr. B if canola oil would be acceptable for you? It is ok later in treatment, so maybe if you can't find plain olive oil, this would be a good option. Otherwise you might have to stick with butter!!
Hope that helps!

Hannah I re-read your email. Do not use any virgin olive oil right now. It can cause a lot of pain. Don't stress about having some more processed foods right now. You are controlling for inflammation. That is the priority. Later comes the power foods when our bodies are ready for them. One step at a time.

Hi Mimi,
Just went to my local grocery store where they had a huge selection of olive oils, but even the ones that were labeled just olive oil or light olive oil had a mixture of virgin and pure olive oil. What brand do you use?
Thanks
Sue

Hi Hannah,
I shouldn't probably reply as I won't see Dr Brizman until the second week of February. But I have been using the organic extra virgin because I could not find it organically in the form required. I don't feel it has any effect on me as I have had very good days having used it.  I'm sure Dr Brizman has very good reasons for requiring  it but I always shop at this farm store (health food type) and that's all they sell. I use butter for a lot of my cooking though as I am trying up gain weight.

Good topic to bring up tho.

Hi Hannah,

I have not found organic non-extra virgin olive oil but definitely found my symptoms improved SO much when I stopped using EVOO.  I have also become a huge fan of butter during treatment and french butter is THE BEST!

Yeah, I LOVE butter HA! I'm not sure I tolerate it though. I've had a day where I used butter without symptoms (small amount), and then the next time I did it, I made it into ghee, but I may have a casein intolerance and just wanted to make sure, and I had a terrible reaction.
That's why this is such a pain for me. Can't find non-extra virgin in France, and not sure I tolerate butter = no fat in my diet :/ I am 5'7'' and weigh 110 pounds and am afraid of losing more... also not sure I tolerate potatoes OR grains. So I'm a little nervous about the fats at the moment as I feel I'm just wasting away...
Anyway, I'll be back in the States soon where processed is abundant! So at least that will change :)
Thanks for your help ladies!

Hannah! Dr. B had a post a few months back that ghee was causing flares! Maybe this is why you reacted so differently? Try goat butter if you can find it.
