I´m always craving red meat. Did Dr. Brizman say anything about excessive meat consumption? I mean do you think I could have it almost daily or would that be contraproductive?

Annika,

I used to avoid red meat because all of the bad press it got.  I was encouraged to have it at least once a day and that twice a day was even fine. I was like you and craved it. I really think it was one of the most helpful things in my diet as far as improving my health. I also had a lot of ground lamb to change things up. I always looked for grass fed beef and try to stick to organic when it goes on sale. I've been on the diet for almost 3 months and think maybe i shoukd be dialing the red meat to every other day.   I really miss it tho if I don't have it every day.

I've been eating red meat 1 to 2 times a day since beginning the diet. In the beginning I really craved it, now the craving is subsiding and there are days when I don't have any. This diet isn't forever, so I feel like if you are eating it a lot now that's ok just because it won't be like this forever. It's just that right now it is extremely useful and healing for us.
I was worried about this in the beginning but now that my cravings are subsiding naturally I get the impression that my body will tell me when enough is enough.

hey sue, ok. what a relief.
The problem is, where I live its really hard to get a good piece of organic meat. Even normal beef is really rare. They only have pork, pork, pork.
I used to avoid meat as well. But since I got IC I crave it so much, it´s unbelievable. Whenever somebody is eating meat I want to jump on his plate and eat it all by myself. :)

Hi Sue! I would not cut back on the read meat until you talk to Dr. Brizman.

I would think everyday is okay but maybe you would sick of it quicker? Go for it. I think patients tend to be malnourished b/c the integrity of the absorbption in the GI tract is not so great so what might be excessive for a normal healthy person is fine for us. In fact I did not eat as much of it in the beginning and I wish I had eaten more b/c it does make a positive impact to eat it. It is practically prescribed by Matia. If you tolerate it well then eat it- there is something profound about red meat in treating IC.

Dr B told me I would need to eat it 5 times per week. It nurishes the depleted tissues in your body. If you can't get organic or grass fed, then just hormone free meat? I thought Europe had some good meat and dairy? I am confused and ignorant!
Also, check around to see if you can find a farm that will sell it to you, or go to a farmer's market and ask. In the US there is a whole kind of underground "network" of family farms and grass-fed meat suppliers. Once you start asking, you may be surprised what you might find. You could find a 1/4 cow or less and freeze it!! Do they sell beef at the store? Buy ground beef, and make meatballs with garlic powder and salt and zuchinnie puree and freeze, freeze, freeze. Also, no pork until Dr. B aprroves it which is much later in treatment. Pork can be a big problem...

Mimi,
Thanks - I will talk with Dr Brizman on Friday. My husband and daughter are aghast at how much red meat I eat a day!

Annika,
I was also under the impression (like Mimi) that the meat was of higher quality in Europe. I didn't think you had an issue with the antibiotic  or genetically modified use like we have in the US. When we were in Austria, I do remember a lot of veal on menus but they also had a lot of goulash soup (which has beef) and steaks. (im not recommending goulash soup because if tomatoes - just recognizing that it includes beef).  Hopefully someone on the forum from over there can better direct you where to get it affordably.

hi all -- i struggle to balance the cost/environmental concerns about eating red meat, too. i try to look for alternate sources of red meat to balance things out a bit. both bison and lamb seem to satisfy my craving and are a teensy bit genter on the wallet and environment.

I eat it all.the.time.  Mmm.  Got some lamb balls in the oven right now.  I follow this recipe:http://berrylocal.com/2012/10/08/mini-meatballs/ and add a sauteed onion.  Also instead of bread crumbs I use cooked rice.  I also dont think its bad for you.  Give this a watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBnniua6-oM  It explains the origins of this idea.

Wow you guys are all lucky you enjoy it so much! I have to force red meat down my throat! But I know it's supposed to be so good for us so I'm trying to have it every second day!

I guess I better ask Dr B how much is too much red meat?  My body craves it so bad that when I dont eat it, I get migraines.  I eat red meat 3 times a day....  have been for the past 18 months.  yikes or ok??  But I have decreased the amount and supplement it with white beans an avocado.  I'm constantly starving for food every 2 hours.

Me too I´m always starving, unless I´m depressed. My mom can´t believe how much I´m eating at the moment and not gaining any weight. I´ve never been so skinny in my life.
Girls, I also thought the U.S. meat is more yucky. When I was 16 I went on a high school year in Indiana and after having a look into the fridge of my host parents I tdecided to be a vegetarian throughout my stay.
But things have changed over here. Its all about saving money. People don´t seem to care about quality anymore. Tomorrow I will have a drive around the surrounding villages. Maybe I can find a good meat shop somewhere.

Last year I took a trip with my husband and was telling Matia that fish and lamb will be easy to find, but i wasn't sure if I can trust to find organic or grass fed. Matia said not to eat fish everyday, and it's important to eat red meat even if it's not organic twice a day. Worst case, once. She also mentioned that it's important to have it for dinner. Not exactly sure why, but I think has to do with long period of time between dinner and breakfast, or body healing itself during sleep?

Thanks Seli, very interesting!!
Annika, in the US (especially on the coasts, but other places) there is a big new interest in sustainable, organic farming and grass fed/pasture raised beef, pork, chicken and pastured eggs. A return to pre-world war II farming practices. Less process foods, and farmers' markets are everywhere. We have a local butcher that processes only pastured animals. It is becoming a big deal in CA. It is more expensive!!.
