So I have recently removed all grain from my life. In december I removed all dairy, and spelt from my diet due to not being able to stop the frequency and urgency symptoms as well as head problems, brain fog, and bad emotions. That was the key I took it out for 5 months, and finally began to move forward on the lists (I was stuck on list 2 for a year and half) and my negative symptoms stopped and I was able to progress to list 3. Than I added spelt back in this past May. I was tolerating it well! My bladder felt great. But the only problem was I wasn't able to tolerate dairy still. But than as months passed some old symptoms came back. I ate spelt all the time everyday maybe even twice a day. At the end of the day and in the morning I had horrible bloat and gas. But my bladder felt good, so I ignored it. I was having a BM so I was happy about that too. I kept the spelt, and than began to add corn in. I ate that everyday as well. I ate less rice and rice products though cause it caused me to have constipation not good for frequency. Than as I continued my corn and spelt craze I got more old symptoms I haven't had since the beginning of treament. Nausea, headaches, dizziness, and than the awful brain fog. It's almost like my body peeked from all the carbs I was consuming.
A week ago I finally said enoughs enough I had popcorn that sent me into a horrible flare in my head dizziness and nausea. I took out corn, but still didn't feel right. i than got horrible muscle pains in my left shoulder, and a weird sore throught. I told Dr. M and she increased my Rp to 4 three times a day. I still felt sick. I than decided to take out spelt and rice. Oh my gosh my head cleared, and nausea disappeared my muscle pain began to go away, and my bloat and gas has gone down considerebly. I began to read the Wheat Belly book can't remember the author at the moment. But he was talking about how wheat affects the body, and how it causes nausea, dizziness, muscle and joint pain, and all these awful things. That convinced me that it was the spelt causing all this awfulness. So I believe wheat/spelt/rice affects the body negatively, and over time it will accumlate in your body, and old symptoms will arise.
SO I just wanted to share with you ladies that we need ot be careful with spelt, rice, and corn. This was the case with me. Carbs cause a great deal of inflammation in my body. Maybe not right away, but it will accumulate. Try to constantly mix up your carbs. Try not to over do it with rice. It's very easy to do. I just wanted to share with you for those things I learned about my body, and maybe it will give you some clues to what might be causing your flares. Everyones different, so maybe this isn't you at all. That's fine this was the key for me. I hope this post helps :D

Thanks for the post. Very interesting. So are you eating ANY carbs? Sweet potatoes, potatoes, quinoa, non-gluten grains like teff? Or are you on a ketogenic diet with no grains or starches? The two scenarios are so different (i have been reading a lot about this lately. The grains are big offenders, but some holistic docs think that our bodies do better as fat burners than glucose burners and recommend no carbs. Some holistic practitioners think a modified ketogenic is best (200 calories per day from "safe" starches). Rice cakes are def. NOT my friend. It took me two years to figure this out! I am having under 200 calories of carbs per day right now and my bowels are pretty good and bloating is improving finally after 2 years (for now!). She did just also add back Juice Plus after taking it out for 4 months because we were using SF 722 for my yeast. So I think supplements at the right time and combination play a huge role too. The answer to your question Mimi. I have taken out just spelt for now. I have lessoned my rice intake too because I will get constipated from too much rice ugh. So for right now my starches are potatoes once a day, rice once a day, and beans. I tried butternut squash but that gives me frequency. I always mix up my starches everyday cause I have learned that my body works best that way. Also try to have the heavier starches in the morning for energy like rice, and than have the lighter starches in the afternoon like beans and than potatoes. I feel like I have a lot of gas and bloat if I have rice at night because it seems to just sit there all night not being burned off. So I am not off all starches because I will have absolutely no energy. The starches I now consume is just a select group.
Now the answer to your dairy question. I have learned that raw cheese works very well so far. I have very little I never over indulge in it. I don't know about the raw butter or milk. The dairy always throws off my emotions super bad, so I probably wait a little longer. I am dying to get butter back haha.

thank you for your interesting post. Since I got IC I have been off gluten for periods of time (many believe there is a strong link between gluten and bladder irritation, one study showed that children who were bed wetting often stopped doing this on a gluten free diet!)
but when I was feeling so good during pregnancy I started to add in more gluten as time went on. Also more carbs. So I am in the process of refining my diet, eating less carbs and I'm considering going totally gluten free again, as I do think I do better with that. Any thoughts on gluten?
also in my case old symptoms returned, but not all... Some bloating, nausea, nerve pain in face, urethra irritation. But I'm doing well this week.
and just wondering, when you were having spelt (bread?) would there have been yeast in it? I wonder if in my case eating occasional yeast has contributed to a return of some symptoms...(or too much carbs. Or adding in gluten again... Probably a bit of everything!)

I was gluten free for almost a year right before I got IC and then went back to a g-free diet for the first year or more with Dr B before I added spelt. I think it is very very complicated but obviously in my case, being gluten free did not help at all. I think there is a difference between the average person who eats pretzels, hot dog rolls, cake etc and me who now eats a small amount of spelt sourdough several times a week. Obviously everyone has to make their own decisions but I think the story with gluten is way more complicated than many people think. I remember reading some study ( I think on here) that showed that people on totally gluten free diets had issues with specific bacteria (maybe it was lowered Bifidum?) in their guts. Of course we all know that story is also multi faceted and it sometimes hard to tell whether it is the chicken or the egg!!

Everyone is different some patients do really well on gluten. For me personally I don't think the gluten in spelt helps the body recover. I have learned that even Dr. M, who has fully recovered from IC only has spelt once or twice a week. I was consuming it once a day and sometimes twice a day, and I am not even well. So by example of Dr. M I am not going to have spelt till I am fully recovered and even then maybe once a week. I want to get better, so it's not worth that once a week indulgence of spelt cookie that will hinder me from healing.
Now for the spelt bread. I have never eaten spelt bread for yeast because I strongly believe that will upselt the intestine. Even if it's natural yeast I don't believe it helps the process of healing. Again this is my opinion if you feel good eating this, and your not having any other symptoms from eating it. That is fine. This is just me.

I just recalled that I Dr. M was talking about Pamela's Mix not spelt that she ate once or twice. I am sorry to confuse you CO and Deir. I am still going to go off spelt for my own health, and see if I heal better. And when I am healed I will eat spelt once or twice a week. I don't want to throw anyone off it they are doing really well on spelt. Again this is what works for me. Everyone has to figure out the keys to their own body.

Thanks! That helps because I eta it each day and don't notice anything. I have 1 or 2 pieces of spelt sourdough and Dr B told me expressly that it was ok for me.I am far from all better but I have good days and bad days regardless of whether I had spelt or not. Pamela's is ironically gluten free! I make things with that every few months when I am really craving soemthing special.

Yes definitely. I get what Deir says too. Gluten- it's complicated. For some it does not make a difference. I just think I did better when gluten free. I am not very good with moderation, like I was allowed agave treats and I really over did it, rather than once or twice a week.
So I think, I will try gluten free, lower carb, no agave for 3 months and hopefully that will make a difference. I will post in January and let you all know!

And when I say lower carb, I mean much less than I was eating up till recently. it is probably the amount most of you are eating! I just didn't adjust that properly since starting treatment.

I hear ya about moderation. I just CAN'T not eat all the biscuits if I make them with Pamela's mix. That and Cape Cod chips are literally the only things I feel like I can't stop with so I make sure they are a rare treat.

ILOVELUCY, thanks for clarifying. I was confused as your OP said that you have cut grains comletely but you are still eating rice. I think you meant you cut gluten grains.
I had a habit of eating a small serving of chips nearly EVERY Day!!! Oy. I cut that out 4 or more months ago. Used to eat spelt bread nearly every day. My bladder does not react to these things but I think there is a cummulative effect in regards to inflammation and/or a change in bowel movements for me. Might be helpful later/after treatment to use a mix of flours when baking. For example, I make a muffin that is essentially1/3 sweet potato and 1/3 mixed-grain gluten-free flour, 1/3 fat/liquid and a leavening agent. This means not a lot of any one thing when I have a treat.
