I was talking to a friend about sodium laural sulfate and realized a lot of people just do not know the harmful list of ingredients in products so I thought I would post this link here for general knowladge.

The website u mentioned says that both of the following:Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) are often disguised as "comes from coconut" but are harmful. How can it be harmful if the source is coconut? I notice my Tom's of Maine toothpaste has SLS too. Dismaying as I thought it was a good 'natural' brand. I do think it is too foamy. Which is a good brand of toothpaste for ICers in List 1?

Most natural toothpastes contain some kind of synthetic surfactant, whether it's SLS or one of its related, lesser known relatives, e.g. sodium cocyl glutamate. To avoid these surfactants the best thing to do is make your own tooth powder by mixing 3 parts baking soda to 1 part salt. Your mouth will feel really fresh! And it's always better for a sensitive body to make your own fresh products just like it's better to make your own fresh food.Coconut oil is used as the raw material for many surfactants because it is cheap and readily available. They take the coconut oil and add anywhere from 10 to 100 other chemicals until they come out with something that foams up really easily and is in no way as pure as the coconut oil that they started with.  I studied chemical engineering in college and it was really shocking to learn what goes into our personal care products. The list of ingredients on the box, little shop of horrors that it may be, doesn't give you the full picture. For instance, before a tooth paste manufacturer can make a 1,000 gallon batch of toothpaste in one of its stainless steel vats, its has to "clean" the line by running degreasers and all sorts of other chemicals through it. Of course it rinses these out with water, but obviously trace amounts of these chemicals get into the product. Like Matia says, you can't avoid all of these toxins no matter how vigilante you are. But knowledge is power.

HI Natalie!I've tried brushing with just baking soda and it does really clean your mouth but tastes awful, so I went back to sprinkling it over my toothpaste but I would rather not use any paste.  Is there a way to make the baking soda taste better, lol?

Unfortunately there isn't much we can do about the taste. Healthy people can add some peppermint or tea tree oil, but neither of those is recommended for IC. However, you can take any dry herbs that you can eat and grind them up and add them to your tooth powder like chamomile or sage, but be sure to check with Matia first.

i have  used arrowroot in place of baking soda for sensitve teeth. Most people add buffered vit c crystals and grind it up in the food processor or blender. and then add herbs such as pepermint myrrh is great for sensitive gums but ask  Matia of corse.

I have receding gums and need the "sensitive" toothpastes.  I just got rid of "Tom's for sensitive teeth" old formula because of the sodium Lauryl Sulfate.  Tom's changed the ingredients, but it is sweetened up with extra Xylitol and isn't very freshening.  What kind of salt do you use with the baking soda, and isn't that a little too abrasive?  What helps with those nasty sensitive gums?  I need the potasium nitrate for the sensitivity.  The tube says that the xylitol is for plaque, and glycyrrhizin from licorice root for foaming (which is does NOT do well).  It also contains aloe.  I wrote Tom's about their toothpaste, and they said they had other complaints and were working on a solution.  That was interesting about how they clean the tubs that the batches of toothpaste are mixed in.  I'll bet if we knew the half of it, we wouldn't want to use any comercial products at all.  Sometimes ignorance is bliss, and sometimes ignorance is dangerous.
