I need hair advice :-). What natural hair coloring products do you use? I have been highlighting my hair with foil using light blonde and golden blonde professional shades at a salon. I haven't attempted to color my entire head of hair in years because it usually looks tacky red or orange. My natural hair color is light/medium ashe brown. Ideally, I would like to have dark blonde hair with warm tones (unless medium blonde is possible without peroxide LOL). Thank you so much!
Hair
Hi veryhappymom,
Ever since I started the treatment with Dr Matia, I started using henna to color my hair. Before that I used commercial hair coloring products. The color used to be blond but now it is dark red. It was a big change from blonde to dark red but I like it now and I get so many complements on how beautiful my hair is and how beautiful the color is. They ask me what I use. I use Light Mountain Henna. It is pure and all natural. There are 0 chemicals in it and it comes in different colors. Just Henna that's all. I had to get used to this color for myself and also applying it. It is a little messy in the beginning but I have been doing this now 1x a month since 3 years. I have gone all the way. Getting better did not come easy for me. The road was long and hard. I felt I had to change everything. I threw all toxins out the door. From the commercial make up, and hair spays to cleaners, to laundry and dishwash detergent and everything that I could think of that was toxic. I did not want to take anymore risk. I now have a health I could not have imagened a few years ago. My hair looks healthy, my skin looks healthy, I have lots of energy and feel great most of the time. Now I do not want my life anymore different. Nature has everything! We do not need any toxins. Here is a website for the henna and see if there is a color that you would like to try :) http://www.iherb.com/ProductsList.aspx?cid=6359470159669834822&gclid=CIPK-pmek5kCFQZeswodRmhWaQSee also these websites http://www.naturalpath.com/environment/does_your_skin_absorb_toxinshttp://safecosmetics.live.radicaldesigns.org/downloads/NotTooPretty_report.pdf I hope this helps :)Much love.Angela.
Angela
Angela which color exactly do you use because from your pictur it looks almost what my haircolor is now?
Color
I use light mountain and the color I use is bright red. My own natural color is actually dark blond to light brown. I do have lots of grey hair and so it really comes out as if I have light red high lights in between the darker red. This picture of me here to the left is actually too dark and so it does not really show the color. It looks lighter in reality. I did try some different colors in the beginning including the light mountain color the grey but that did not do anything it was just more work. I just use the bright red one and it comes out beautiful! I have been doing this for 3 years now and I love it. My hair looks and is healthy and strong. It is long and it is easy to keep up. The color does not fade. After a couple of weeks 2 to 3 weeks you will see the roots outgrow appear. I always do the roots first and than I still add the rest of the henna into my hair.I do not believe that henna is bad for our hair at all. It has been used for thousands of years. I do believe that it can be different for everyone. So one would need to try it and see. I do this 1x a month. I use distilled water with it (otherwise your hair will turn green they say). I let mine sit for about 4 hrs...yes that it a long time :) But I do this on a day that I do not go anywhere. I stay home and do loads of laundry, house cleaning and other things around the house. After the 4 hrs I take a shower and wash my hair 2x. I brush it and let it air dry until almost dry and then I blow dry the last moist that is left in my hair. After that the next few hair washes the color will still show in the towel but after that it will stop. The color stays the whole time and like I said then after a few weeks the roots will start to show and then after about 4 to 5 weeks I do it again :)I love henna :)Angela.
Henna
Angela I am trying to get the courage to use henna this week. If the color does not turn out can you dye over the henna or do you have to let it wash out?
Henna for Kriste
Hi Kriste,I am not sure about that. I did a little part of my hair on the inside near the neck for the 1st time and I did try different colors too. So I liked the birght red one because it came out really nice and I have been using that one ever since. You can do this too. Try a little 1st and then see if you like it :)Angela.
henna
I also have been using henna since I started seeing Matia. I remember that my scalp and bladder always used to burn for a couple of days after I had my hair chemically processed. Deep inside I knew I needed to stop using chemicals on my hair, but as a lot of us know it often takes something dramatic to get us to actually change our ways. When people hear the word henna they often think of a garish red color, but it comes in lots of different shades. For me, the really cool thing about henna is that my grey hairs come out a brighter color so it is like getting my hair highlighted. I started out doing the henna myself and learned a lot at this website: http://www.mehandi.com. I also bought my henna powder from them. I've since started having my henna done professionally, but only because I felt like I needed some pampering. My hairstylist was super excited to be able to do henna for me and the other stylists at the salon are always blown away by how my hair looks, I often get the surprised reaction of "that's henna?". I love henna, it makes my hair look and feel great. Carol
henna
I have also changed my hair color. I use Herbatint but I this still has chemicals but less than what I used before. I am interested in the Henna though. Thanks for posting this. I have stayed away from it because I thought that it would not deal with the greys, but maybe I should give it a try. I know that my hair is much better since I have stopped using so much product on my hair. I now have the shine back and also have lots of compliments. I always thought that I needed to buy product to put shine into the hair. I can't believe the amount of things that I used to put into my hair. I know that I can still improve maybe by using the henna. Was it easy to get a hairdresser to put the henna in for you?
I always use Naturetint line
I always use Naturetint line that you can find in every healthfood store or on line. They have huge variety of shades and you have to be only on List 2 of Matia's protocol to be able to use it. I actually like it's quality much betther than most salon's brands.
Thanks
Thank you for the fantastic hair advice! Does Henna only come in red tints or are there other options? I love red hair & highlights although I con't know if I could pull it off with my coloring. I am flying to California in May for my first appointment. Dr. Brizman will probably have me on list 1 for a while since my IC is severe. Is Henna or any other hair coloring products on list 1? Thanks.Sharon
lots of color options
Since I got my hairdresser started with using henna, she has taken on other clients who also use henna. She says I am the only one who does a red tint, the others use shades of brown which I have not seen but she says they work very nicely. My henna usually starts to fade out after about 4-5 weeks, which is what I found to also be true when I was using chemical products. You can use henna on list 1. It took a couple of trys to get my color just right. I sit under one of those heating/dryer things to help the color take. But it really does cover my grey nicely. It's not so hard to do at home either, but it can be messy. Don't use your nice towels for this, henna will stain them. Carol
hey! i would like to use the
hey! i would like to use the brown henna for my hair? has anyone used this shade? and how long does henna usually last?
Color Chart
Torey, This site has a color chart http://www.light-mountain-hair-color.com/. I thought the light brown shade looked natural and should last about 5 weeks. Sharon
Henna is tough on hair
Hi,
I have ashe blonde hair and I have bad news... I have been around the block... a lot with hair color and ashe blonde is the most difficult. It has a lot of gold in it which has red undertones which is why you turn brassy if you go lighter or red if you try darker. You really need to go to a professional if you don't want either to happen. Henna is very dyring to the hair and destructive... very bad for us IC patients since hair strength is typically a problem. I would not use henna, at all. Yes it is natural, but it destroys. If you dn't want to go blonde, then darker shades do not need to have bleach in them... Shop around I would recommend doing low lights so that you are not putting a whole head of color on, but you are getting good results that don't damage your hair. Hope this helps. Also, you MUST use a color protecting shampoo to make your dye last longer preferrably one that is sulfate free... Do not wash every day and stay away from the pool and wear a hat so the sun doesn't fade your hair color!
hair
Slightly off the subject but does anyone think that their hair is growing slower these days? I cut my hair a while backand it seems to be taking FOREVER to grow out. Am I imagining this? I have heard that the kidneys govern hair and skin in chinese medicine so maybe if they are occupied with healing that energy towards hair growth is compromised? sound like a theory? Just thinking aloud here...
You are not imagining it at
You are not imagining it at all! My hair never used to grow before I started with Matia, it took forever to grow a couple of inches. After about 2 years I noticed that I started making trimming appointments much, much more often. Of course, everyone is different, so you might start noticing much improvement of the growth sooner than that.
Shampoo and Conditioner
I'm interested in knowing what brand of shampoo everyones uses and, if they use a conditioner, what brand that might be? Thanks
if i already have brown hair
if i already have brown hair and just want to freshen it up, could i just use a brown henna and nothing crazy will happen?
Torey
Torey, The color chart (see above) looked like light brown should turn out pretty natural. I know the henna company highly recommends coloring a test strand. The easiest way to do this is to use the hair from your hair brush so that you don't have to cut a small piece of your own hair. If you want a no risk way to freshen up your color, you could try natural/neutral henna. It won't affect your hair color and should make it shiny and soft. If you decide to use henna, I would love to hear about your results.Sharon
color test
Now I remember that I color tested the henna using hair from my hairbrush. It's been so long that I forgot until Sharon mentioned it. Just mix up a little bit of henna and let it sit on the hair for at least 1-2 hours and cover it so the henna doesn't dry up. Then rinse it out and you will get a good idea of how your hair is going to look. Carol
Carlol or Angela
Do you both just mix the henna with water or do you add other things to it. I was reading for grey hair it is good to put in apple cider vinegar for grey in the hair. Of course I am afraid to use vinegar for fear of a flare. If you don't use the vinegar does the color hold in the grey hair? I am testing a piece in my hair now and also some hair from my brush. Hope it works.
Thanks
kristie
When I was doing my hair myself I used water and I also added in some lemon juice as I read somewhere that the acidity of the lemon helps the henna to 'take' better. The lemon juice didn't irritate me. My hairdresser only uses hot water to mix the henna. I do know that heat seems to be important, it helps to open up your hair's cuticle. I don't notice a big difference between with and without using the lemon as far as my grey goes. The henna does cover my grey very well and doesn't wash or fade out on my grey. Good luck!Carol
For Kriste
I never added and still now never add anything else to it. I use distilled hot water and that is it. Like Carol says it covers the gray well. I have not had any problem with it. Make sure you do not use any metal with this. I cook my distilled water in a glass pan and I use wooden spoons and I have a "Henna outfit" :) I keep these clothes everytime after I washed them together with all my other henna tools.Have fun with it :)Angela.
I was wondering if anyone
I was wondering if anyone else tried Henna that Angela has recommended, and what colors have you guys used?
Henna
Hi ladies,
Saw these posts regarding henna. Unfortunately, the bottom line is nothing is ever completely safe. FDA has very weird regulations about things and there are certain thing that companies by law can skirt around. Here is some information regarding henna. It may not apply to what product you are using, but it is definitely food for thought: http://www.naturalexpressions.org/fake_henna2.html
henna
I've just tried Light Mountain Henna that Angela has recommended on this site a while ago. Not only it didn't bother my bladder one bit, but the color is the best I could ever hope for, and after 4 weeks it is just the same. All the "natural" stuff I've tried before would start fading practically right away. Also, for the first time in years my hair shines!
I've used shade Red and kept it on for 4 hours.
