Tooth paste & sulfate chemicals

After reading the gentle products guide, I am trying to figure out which toothpaste to use.  I looked into Tom's and Jason's and noticed that most of them were either whitening or contained floride.  I think their antiplaque toothpaste would be safe although I was disappointed that these products contain sodium lauryl sulfate.  What toothpaste have you used that has not irritaded your bladder (Please list a specific Tom's and Jason's product)? I tring to be especially careful to avoud further bladder pain.

Hi Sharon...I seemed to be fine with Tom's natural fluoride-free fennel toothpaste. Then, I was staying in the state of Washington and shopped at Trader Joe's. There, I picked up Trader Joe's no-fluoride antiplaque fennel toothpaste. I found it very good and when I returned to Tom's was struck with the fact it is so much stronger tasting, so stocked up on Trader Joe's. I have no problems with it, no laurel sulfate and cheaper.

Sharon, I've used ALL flavors of Tom's including a strawberry one for kids with no problems at all. I am pretty sure Matia wouln't list it at all or specify a flavor not to be used. Go for it!

Thanks for the advice!  I had been procrastinating on the toothpaste and needed an extra doe of encouragement:D

I have sensitive gums and I use Tom's Sensitive.  It does not have SLS in it, and they are about to come out with two new mint sensitive ones.  I have also used Nature's Gate Creme De Anise, which does have SLS, without any problems.

I really like Tom's of Maine SLS-free, fluoride-free spearmint flavour toothpaste.I don't think SLS or fluoride is good for bladders or general health.

Jane,  I definitely need to try Tom's spearmint toothpaste.  I bought my kids the strawberry flavor and have been having terrible pain after using it.  Thanks for the tip!

I would be careful with the spearmint. It's a very strong flavor. If the strawberry gave you trouble, the mints might as well. You might try baking soda and water until you're a little further in treatment. I know this is yucky but it might be more gentle on the bladder and it will clean your teeth. Has anybody else tried baking soda and water? Tammy

Tammy,  Good idea!  I remember someone mentioned making it with salt on the site.  I am going to look it up and post it.

I used sodium bicarb (baking soda) on my toothbrush but when I asked my dentist he said it was too abrasive to use every day and not to use it more than once a week. The spearmint in Tom's of Maine (SLS and fluoride free) is very mild, it doesn't give me any probs, its not like some of the ordinary toothpastes which have very strong spearmint flavour. I've run out of my supply of Tom's of Maine bought while in LA and am now using a Brit make (SLS free and fluoride free) which has cinnamon, clove and myrrh - great essential oils for oral health - it tastes very strong but it doesn't give any problems. Matia said it is ok for me to use it. It would probably be too strong for some.

Jane, Glad to know that Tom's spearmint is mild.  I am planning to try it this week.  I used baking soda today and had no problems (except for the taste LOL).  My teeth are very cavity prone so I should try Tom's.  I will let you know how it works out.

Sharon, just to say that when I went to the dentist recently it was the first time EVER in my life that my teeth got a good report from the dentist - I have spent my life in and out the dentist chair due to cavities and gum problems, (partly due to excess sweets as a child). The only thing that has changed is 6 months treatment with Matia (9 months on the diet overall). I'm convinced the diet is the reason as I've used one of Tom's toothpastes for years so the toothpaste is not a factor. I believe there is a theory that your diet is more important for the health of your teeth than which toothpaste you use, I've seen Weston Price mentioned in connection with this and am about to buy his book 'Nutrition and Physical Degeneration' 8th edition.By the way, my dentist (mercury-free of course!) thinks that fluoride is a poison.

Interesting points. I have had terrible teeth problems until I stopped drinking juice a few years ago.  My children have had teeth problems as well.  I recently took them off juice and they are finally getting used to drinking water.  Now I need to cut more sweets out of their diet.  Thanks for sharing.

I have been using Tom's natural antiplaque toothpaste spearmint with no problems.  Now I just need to find a deodorant that works LOL!
