Does anyone else have problems taking probiotics?  I take very small doses but do not seem to tolerate them well.  Especially my bowels get really irritable on all of them.  My bladder doesn't like the digestalac and bifidus.  Is anyone else experiencing this?

When I first started taking the probiotics I did okay with the megadolphilus but then when we added the bif I had a terrible time accepting it and I had to go very very very slowly in increments until I tolerated it.That took months. Then my body and bladder really liked it and I would feel good after taking them. But this has changed off an on in the past year. I've gone off them and then had trouble accepting them again and found them to be too much - found my intestines would cramp sometimes after taking them or bloat up. I found they seemed to accelerate my die off symptoms in unpleasant ways as much as I knew they were doing the right things simulataneously. How long have you been on them? It's confusing why one month they seem to be helping me in terms of how I feel to the next month causing some increased burning sensation. Such is the dynamic and ever changing nature of our process. I think there are just times when we have to grit our teeth and go through some relative discomfort until body toleration occurs. It doesn't always take a long time and sometimes it just clicks and your body shifts to getting a beneficial response- the kind of response that we like to see and feel. I have heard people say that the probiotics seem to increase their anxiety symphtoms -probably due to yeast die off. Even though they can make my bladder burn I am trying to embrace the probiotics. I want that healthy flora balance so bad! Thanks for reading.Mary

I have been in treatment the same amount of time as Honeybee.  I have realized that my downward spiral this year is due to the probiotics.  I just can't seem to tolerate them at all.  I had gone off of them for a couple of months and realy felt a lot better.  This past week we tried to put them back in in small amounts but again I started to feel worse.  I get frequency and can't sleep at night also can't go for walks because of the frequency.  I am upset that I can't accept them but don't know what to do.  I am wondering if anyone has tried a different brand other than Natren and had better luck.  At this point I am really afraid to take them because I fell so much better off of them.

Thanks for answring Kriste and Honeybee.  I have been on and off them for years, mostly the mega, but sometimes we add in a small amount of bifidus or digestalac.  I am on such a small dose, about 1/32 tsp - just a bit more than a pinch - that it is a wonder they are having any affect at all.  My bowels have constant cramping and I get really loose, frequent movements.  My rectal tissues are very inflamed and sore to the point that I took the probiotics out of my regimen this morning.  I have been in treatment several years and have taken them off and on.  I just don't understand how people tolerate large doses of them.

Yes, bowels and bladder can be very affected.  For me- I went along for a while on the probiotics, adding and adding and doing fine... got up to 3 Megas & 12 Bifido/day!  Then one day my stomach revolted... I thought I had food poisoning... and after that point I kept having major gas, diarrhea and stomach cramping.  Even though the probiotics were good for & helping my bladder, the intestinal issues they caused worsened my bladder, so we had to go down on everything.  It's been a long time creeping back upward, much more slowly this time, to allow my intestines to adjust.

Thanks for your input, Lisa.  I have been on this small dose of digestalac and mega for about 4 months now, and the irritation in my bowels just kept getting worse.  The gas, bloating, loose bowels and rectal irritation have been really bad lately.  I was on SF722's as well.  I finally quit everything on Sunday and I am still a mess.  I haven't been able to get out of the house much this summer.  I think all this irritation can not be a good thing.  I wonder how long it will take to get back to where I was before, which wasn't that great to begin with.  It seems every time I try to add in small amounts of any of the probiotics my bowels get irritated.  Most of the time my bladder gets irritated on them as well.  It is very depressing.  Since everything in the body seems to have a balance, I wonder if it is possible to take too much of these good bacteria and actually create an imbalance?  You know, too much of a good thing.  Just a thought.

I don't know about taking too much good bacteria causing imbalance, but wonder if maybe your body just can't handle the probiotics at all yet.  They are very strong for many.  I know some ppl in treatment who keep having to go off of them b/c their bodies can't handle it.  Also, I wouldn't expect instant betterness since stopping everything Sunday. If your body got all irritated with your being on them for many months as you said, it could take a while to feel better... just my guess.
I can imagine how depressing that could be - esp as you say you just want to get back to a place that wasn't that great to begin with!  This process is like climbing a mountain and continually taking little (or sometimes big) falls along the way. I know it's so difficult. I'm sorry you're having to go thru all this. :-(

I am one of those patients that just can't seem to tolerate the probiotics.  I am over a year in treatment and have tried numerous times with little success.  For awhile I got worse and worse and could not figure it out.  I finally just stopped everything because I was desperate and realized that I felt a little better without the probiotics.  I now feel a tons better without them.  I tried again a few weeks ago and could feel my pain coming back so stopped and better again.  I know they are good for you but they don't like me.  hopefully in the future I will be able to take them but for now I am afraid of them.  My burning and frequency just goes through the roof and my sleep is really interrupted.   I am wondering if others have tried a different brand other than Natren and been successful.

Changing brands of probiotic does really help some patients.  Unfortunately, I have tried several over the course of treatment with the same result.  My probiotic issues are more intestinal than bladder related.  I can insane bloating, acid reflux, and nausea.  I've never been able to understand why.  Hopefully changing brands would help you, Matia can tell you what to try.
