Being as I'm always the one asking the questions, I thought I would offer some of my experience of things that have helped or I've found to be unhelpful. I must emphasise that this is only MY experience, it could be different for others.
Exercise - I've found that walking (on flat) and swimming cause the least discomfort and and an occasional jog also on flat) has also not thrown up any discomfort.
Improving the circulation by exercise seems extremely beneficial both physcially & mentally - makes perfect sense as we're not designed to be sedentary but unfortunately that's what can happen due to pain & fatigue.
I've also tried a little rowing which didn't seem to cause any problem for me although the strenuous warm ups did. Anything that isolates the stomach and pelvic regions has not proved good for me, that includes inclines and stepping/climbing movement - I gather that this puts pressure on the already tight/stiff pelvic muscles.
I used to be a big user of saunas and steams but thinking back this is where I noticed my symptoms worsen, 7 or so years ago. I recently tried to use them again and found they caused flares. I have no idea but possibly the dehydration & warm damp environment could encourage yeast? Just a thought.
I hope to try some IC specific yoga stretches when my balance improves and have just looked up some information on lymphatic massage and will post any comments if I feel they could be of use.
Exercise
is huge to me. I am addicted to it in a good way. Though sometimes it is still hard to push myself to do it, I am so glad I do when I am done. It makes my bladder feel so much better for a couple hours afterwards. The more I sweat, the better. I alternate between strength training, and cardio/interval training. I can't really stand to take even one day off, but am trying to have a complete rest day on Sunday. Walking too, when there is a bathroom close, is very nice as long as I am moving at a fast pace. Anything too slow does not make my bladder feel better. I also do Jillian Michael's yoga dvd's and a few other yoga and pilates.
This again, is so individual though. I think for a lot of people strenuous exercise is more damaging then good. So your recommended walking and swimming is a great idea I think; as long as the water you are swimming in is fresh. I flare if I even put my feet in a regular swimming pool.
Thanks for the info.
I also have found excercise
I also have found excercise helpfull as long as I have the energy. This seems to vary almost on an hourly basis at the moment.
I have noticed about a day after a visit to the gym that I can feel a bit tired but I think excessive sweating can increase die off and I assume that is why.
Walking is a great excercise, though I am not allowed to swim in regular pools, sea water only. The chemicals in most pools are too harsh.
Yes energy is a real problem
Yes energy is a real problem for me also and so is finding a pool without chlorine.. I mostly walk if I can get out of the house but have found that doing high impact exercise or anything that makes you sweat a bit, very helpful although this hasn't been practised of late.
